despre pace-Oppenheimer-Kerouac-Eminem & more

adresat piloților kamikaze de pe portavionul Yamamoto

îl voi data, azi, 11 martie 2003, semnat cutare, etc, etc, etc,

„how I wish, how I wish you were here

we’re just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl

year after year”

a se evita iarba, LSD-ul, coca_hero & other scări spre cer;

prostii.

exclus: anarhie, autarhie, anacronie, autonomie!

printre rujuri, creioane dermatograf, amulete, nimicuri,

ea are dorințe unice și paralele

a sentimentelor dăruite,

are o casă fără camere la Polul Nord

don’t let me down, îmi șoptește,

ea are, în fine…

nu-i Shakespeare, nici Baudelaire, nici dramă,

dar…

desigur, știți acum, așaaaa,

uite cum se repetă istoria,

dama asta are ceva!

On Translating the Poems into English — Intention, Method, and Negotiation

The translation of the ten poems from UNSPREZECE — Found Poems began with a simple question: how could we carry into English not merely the meaning of texts written in 2003, but also their energy, spontaneity, humor, cultural references, and freedom of association?

From the outset, we agreed that we were interested neither in a literal, academic translation nor in a rewriting that would turn the poems into something else entirely. We were looking for an equivalence of experience rather than a strictly lexical one. The Western reader was supposed to encounter a cultivated, ironic, occasionally vulgar 25-year-old, passionate about architecture, music, literature, and experimentation, writing with little concern for the conventions of poetry.

Our initial direction was to bring the texts closer to the alternative Western poetry of the early 2000s, with a subtle trace of the Beat legacy, already filtered through postmodernism, pop culture, television, and the early internet. We did not want to imitate the original Beat poets, but rather to recover the way their freedom of expression might have survived in the mindset of 2003.

The first attempts stayed too close to the Romanian phrasing. The imagery survived, but the English became stiff, sometimes artificial. We therefore decided to allow idiomatic adaptations, rhythmic adjustments, and small metaphorical reconstructions. A Romanian expression that could not be carried naturally into English could be replaced with one capable of producing a comparable effect on an English-speaking reader.

We then pushed the translation toward a more colloquial, direct language. The result had energy, but it lost some of its musicality, subtlety, and cultural richness. We tried to compensate by introducing a more literary, emotional, and nostalgic English. That version, however, sounded too mature: it seemed to have been written by someone looking back on his youth rather than someone actually living it.

This was where we identified the crucial distinction: the poems must belong to 2003, not look back at 2003. Nostalgia may emerge in the experience of today’s reader, but it should not be artificially introduced into the author’s voice.

We therefore returned to the energy of a 25-year-old, while preserving cultural intelligence, musicality, and metaphorical freedom. References to Ginsberg, Kerouac, Boris Vian, Janis Joplin, Einstein, Degas, or popular culture are not displays of intellectual sophistication. They belong to the spontaneous vocabulary of a young man who effortlessly mixes high culture with ordinary objects, politics, eroticism, absurdity, and vulgarity.

We also negotiated the degree of freedom allowed in the adaptation. We began with approximately 10–12% intervention, later accepting greater flexibility, around 20%, in phrasing, rhythm, and idiomatic construction. These percentages remained guidelines rather than actual measurements. The essential condition was that the important images, character, meaning, and original impulse should survive. We even allowed new jokes or associations, but only where they seemed to emerge naturally from the same mind that had written the poems.

We avoided both excessive Americanization and the mechanical preservation of every Romanian peculiarity. The historical and geographical context remains recognizable, but the language must function independently for an English-speaking reader. We are not translating one culture into another word for word; we are looking for ways in which two different cultural sensibilities can produce a similar response.

The result is a series of poetic adaptations rather than philological translations. The English texts retain the fragmentary, associative, occasionally cheeky or deliberately ridiculous character of the originals, while attempting to develop a musicality and naturalness of their own.

Essentially, our aim was not to retrospectively correct the young man who wrote them. Not to make him wiser, more sentimental, more disciplined, or more talented than he himself was trying to be. We simply wanted to give him another language in which he could experiment with the same freedom.

We didn’t want the poems to sound like translations from Romanian. We wanted them to sound like poems the same person might have written in English, in March 2003.

That is the intention behind the translation and, at the same time, the criterion by which we consider the adaptation successful.

01. Homeland, Wafers, Felt-Tip Pens & Plasticine

well, fuck. here we go again.
everything’s coming to a head.

which sacrificial generation are we, anyway?
I’ve lost count.
another generation of magnificent losers
raised on chocolate wafers, felt-tip pens, plasticine,
the living and the dead
stuffed into shipping containers or issued visas
to Canada, New Zealand,
the United States of Whatever.

stop, I tell myself.
it’s lovely here.
the smell of shit and Christmas cake,
the dried blood on the miners’ clubs, vintage 1991.

on television they’re discussing dead dogs in Herăstrău Park.
not the dogs inside us, obviously.
those are doing just fine.

reality stinks.
I light another cigarette
and take the escalator up to God.

we chat, exchange cigarettes, inspect our lighters.
mine’s red. ciao agip.
his says in god you trust.

oh, do you?

I believed in things once.
the Little Falcons of the Fatherland, for instance.
me, a first-class idiot,
a penguin in uniform,
saluting myself in the mirror,
tra_la_lala_la_la_la.

now we’re all falcons.
we’ve flown off in every possible direction,
each leaving a small fart in the atmosphere,
while the homeland waits at a traffic light
like a Trabant that’s run out of petrol.

the Germans make Volkswagens, Audis,
Mercedes, BMWs.
we make Dacia Dacia Dacia
Dacia Dacia.

tomorrow it’ll snow.
or rain.
or neither.
we’ll laugh at some idiotic news item
and at the people who told us
we’d eventually get into everything
like a knife through butter.

I’ll go first.

I’ll walk into a grocery store
and ask for a one-way plane ticket.
Bucharest–Otopeni–Anywhere.
not Baghdad, thank you.

then I’ll collect my cigarettes,
my salami, my eggs,
and whatever change the universe owes me.

Andrei says we’re becoming alienated
unless we reconfigure our relationship with reality.

reconfigure, Andrei?
reality sucks.
and the architecture of destiny
looks like somebody forgot the structural calculations.

what was that word again?
ah, yes.
programmatic documents.

programmatic documents!
fantastic.

I’ll write one.
peace–Oppenheimer–Kerouac–Eminem & assorted miracles.
addressed to the kamikaze pilots
on Yamamoto’s aircraft carrier.

March 11, 2003.
signed: whoever.
please reply before the war ends.

too late?
everybody’s dead?

excellent.

alienation operates outside time.
no opening hours, no customer service.

everything happens subversively.

you look through a keyhole
and there’s Einstein taking a piss.

or flushing the toilet.
whatever.

try putting that in a physics textbook.

you turn around
and the present is standing at attention
eating chocolate wafers.

this is Radio România.
the time was six o’clock.

was?
six o’clock where?
whose six o’clock?

Andrei says heaven isn’t far.
take the elevator.
third floor, perhaps.
ask for the ghost department.

life comes in slices,
little disconnected frames,
a film with half the footage missing.

there used to be a hole in the yellow.

somebody punched a hole
straight through the national polenta.

start again.
assuming I still exist.

there is always a ZERO.

ZERO and ONE.
two digits.
all our mysteries and fears
squeezed into a couple of electrical impulses.

I’m lucid and I suffer.
terribly inconvenient.

I refuse to believe dreams
aren’t another form of possible reality.

lucidity is cancer of the soul anyway.

sometimes I feel
like I’m living inside a transparent bird
so exhausted by flying
it forgot to give birth to me.

and there I am,
inside the transparent bird,
wanting to be Janis Joplin for an afternoon,
to borrow Ginsberg’s effortless nerve,
to walk around with car headlights in my hands,
click-click at intersections,
illuminating absolutely nothing.

I want to get tangled up
in the glorious rubbish of everyday life,
from garbage cans
to the places Greyhound never goes.

I want a transparent girl
I can give transfusions of rainwater to,
lying on the back seat
of a pink 1938 Cadillac de Ville.

I want mornings that begin at 2:05 p.m.,
unshaven,
all the clocks in all the towers
having already done their little performances.

I want Donald Duck slippers,
Captain Blake’s telescope,
her breasts like ships
cutting through the air.

I want to be a rebel,
all that froth from Boris Vian’s days,
a world made of sugar and chewing gum
I can twist into Degas ballerinas.

I want to be myself.
an orange tree.
a girl hiding an orange
between her thighs.

and if you don’t believe me,

I can always go back
to the garage
and fix somebody’s fucking car.

02. A Poem About Alienation, Television & Tomorrow as a Mere Reference Point

the problem is
we don’t even give a damn anymore.

“excessive drinking is seriously bad for your health”
isn’t exactly a solution.

and that ought to tell us something.

ought

to

TELL

us

that

we’ve run out of answers
to the many fashionable varieties of alienation.

cocacolamcdonaldcnnmtv
and the list could go on forever if—

if what?

the entire hippie generation would laugh its ass off at us.
put flowers in our hair,
make love in our wheelchairs,
we, the permanently disabled citizens of the future.

through the window
everything looks like footage
from some parallel universe.

I don’t want another stupid little conflict.
I don’t want to hear “maybe.”
I don’t want to travel through time
with famous dead people anymore.

God is a crooked god.
he knocked us together out of scraps
on his day off
and didn’t even bother to tell us.

I’m surfing these miserable TV channels.

there’s a talk show.
a bunch of idiots discussing
whether there’s something wrong with being Iraqi.

and suddenly I’m living in Kafka,
another alienated bastard surviving the world
only because he’s learned
how to forget there is a world.

thank God there are still lunatics
who practise happiness,
who fall in love,
who actually love.

thank God somebody’s still writing poetry
even if the angels are smoking weed in the clouds,
their lungs completely fucked,
coughing their halos off.

somewhere in the spectral department of illusion
I still have a weakness
for the religion of love.

which is why I refuse
to live for mating purposes only.

I suppose I should give up.

instead I wake up screaming
with the taste of happiness on my tongue.

I orbit somewhere between
a rotten primordial destiny
and this permanent hunger for words.

and the morons inside the television
are still asking
whether there’s something wrong with being Iraqi.

milk_meat_cheese_eggs.

isn’t there a Blend-a-Med campaign
for brushing your brain?

I can feel the cries of strangers
standing on the negative edge of unhappiness.

the Serbian prime minister
has been assassinated in Belgrade.

and yeah.
I couldn’t care less.

alienation is an acute form
of coming apart.

remember when they told us
we’d exceeded the production targets?
record harvests,
record everything,
nobody in the world quite like us?

all I remember now
is the smell of leaves burning in the parks,

the shape of her breasts,
nipples made of burnt sugar,

orange boots
leaving little tracks in the snow.

I don’t want to remember anything
except the simple stuff.

the beautifully, stupidly ordinary.

a, e, i, o, u.

but then a fairy comes down from heaven,
slips into my dream through the keyhole
and whispers a little Pink Floyd
into my ear.

two lost souls.
the same fishbowl.
another year.

what a shame.
I haven’t been able to tell heaven from hell
for ages.

I can still say yes.

I can still say no.

NO, YOU MORONS!

there’s nothing wrong with being Iraqi.

there’s definitely something wrong
with being a moron.

03. A Poem About Putting Your Foot in It

(are we all going to Iraq to give Saddam a haircut? why?)

why the fuck is it snowing like this
all over Bucharest
in the middle of March?

wasn’t the homeland depressing enough already?

now the capital needs a blizzard.

Keith Jarrett is coming through the speakers,
squeezing the last drop of butter
out of the piano keys.

what kind of beauty,
what kind of exquisite horror
must be living inside somebody
who can play like that?

I’m reading:

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE PROPER USE OF LIFE.

do not waste your days.

avoid unprotected sex
for twenty-first-century reasons.

avoid weed, LSD, coke_heroin
and other stairways to heaven.

in case of emergency
use death.

do not dismantle religions,
democracies, technocracies
or any other elaborate nonsense.

strictly prohibited:
anarchy,
autarchy,
anachronism,
autonomy.

too late.

I’ve already left.
a perfectly self-contained autistic universe.

I’m sailing my ship of broken glass
across seas of absinthe
with my old friends Humboldt, Verne and Blake,

and that entire generation
of transparent ghosts
who were once informed
that war was a necessary evil.

so half of us left
while the other half stayed behind
to hold A.G.’s thirteen-fourteen.

E still equals MC squared.

the homeland, meanwhile,
hasn’t moved an inch.

still here with its leaves and grass,
its moth-eaten heroes
escaping from history books,

tower blocks and cranes,
pencil sharpeners, compressors,
cars with flashing blue lights.

I don’t have answers to much.

but I know we never conquered anything.
not once.

we lacked the calling,
the devotion,
the genius,
or maybe just the grace.

and you, my darling,
in case you’ve forgotten,

today is Friday the fourteenth.
it’s spring.
and it’s snowing.

and I love you because you exist,
not because I do.

eat an orange.

think of me as a sad tiger.

eventually we’ll learn
how to love each other in basements,
how to tattoo our most delicate feelings
straight onto our skin.

eventually we’ll lose our minds,
pack our bags,
head for our mountains
or somebody else’s.

we’ll find Doctor Guevara,
sit beside a fire
with our hands cracked open by the cold,

and listen to stories
about how Cuba was supposed to turn out.

how wonderful.
how absolutely wonderful
that it’s snowing in Bucharest.

and above all,

how happy Andrei is today.

he’s reading Zenobia
with his entire soul.

04. Making Love to the Kitchen Furniture

I’ve wanted to make love
to the kitchen furniture
for quite some time.

to stroke the breasts of the drawers
where the forks lie sleeping.

to have every chair become a mistress,
hot thighs,
desperate for me to come home.

the tap would cry without stopping.

the washing machine,
a stuck-up little virgin,
would suffer its first electric violation.

I’ve always wanted a sensual radiator,
all steam and curves,
something I could touch

constantly,

without permission,

without censorship.

a permanent vibration
between my rough skin
and the plastic curtain.

I was ready.

I’d had my blood tests.
everything came back fine.

I’d bought dozens of condoms
because the thought absolutely terrified me
that in the middle of all this madness
the kitchen furniture might get pregnant.

and then, God forbid,
I’d wake up one morning
surrounded by tiny snotty chairs
whimpering on the ruby-checkered carpet,

little drawers and miniature cupboards,
white or pink,
wearing shiny disposable nappies
and chewing stainless-steel pacifiers.

even at my most irresponsible
I was afraid.

afraid of sharing my kitchen
with somebody else.

anyway.
I’d made up my mind.

today or never.

I was dying to sink my teeth
into the wooden chest of the table.

and maybe it would’ve happened.
maybe everything would’ve gone perfectly well.

if you hadn’t shown up.

if you hadn’t suddenly decided

to move your body

into my place.

05. She

she spills whole incidents across the night,
pours the sand of broken hourglasses
into crystal glasses.

she walks barefoot
over the fragments of the day.

rings strangers’ doorbells
to wish them happy birthday.

pours little stolen pieces of dreams
into her ears,
dreams shoplifted from stores and shopping malls.

sometimes she wears me on her wrist
like her favourite lucky charm.

other times she throws me,
furious,
into the fashionable chaos of her handbag,

among lipsticks,
eyeliner pencils,
amulets,
assorted little nothings.

she has desires
unique and parallel,
locked away in a chest
with seven crystal locks.

she feeds popcorn
to the pigeons in the square.

makes plans,
makes illusions,
never sticks to either.

she smokes naked on the balcony
to the despair of the neighbours
and the collective disgust
of wives who smell of homemade vegetable relish.

every now and then
she fixes a seashell
to the purple wall of her bedroom,

presses her ear against it,
quite pleased with herself,

and listens to the sea
minding its own business.

she hangs all her tears
over my shoulders.

all her melancholies.
all her little insanities.

she’s guilty of excessive tenderness.

sleeps with her temple
against the beating of my heart,
a serious, multicoloured kiss
hidden somewhere between her ribs.

she calculates the VAT on happiness.

a pathological need
to keep precise accounts
of every feeling she’s ever given away.

she owns a house without rooms
at the North Pole.

every year she spends
an insignificant part of her holiday there
with some temporary lover.

she makes her own ridiculous clothes
because she’s unique, apparently,
and nothing in the ordinary shops
quite fits.

she puts rosehip syrup
in her morning coffee.

makes pancakes
with ham and spinach.

bends the corners of sadness
with her fingernails.

lets strangers love her.

listens to the Beatles
and cries.

don’t let me down,
she whispers,

printing little bald kisses
all over my palms.

she knocks at the gates of clouds
with rain nobody’s heard of.

invents sad stories
whose main characters
get killed off in the opening pages.

she fills the air with mysteries.

she drinks milk with beer.

grows temporary melancholies
somewhere inside herself.

collects planets and stars.

she laughs.

she runs.

she screams.

she flows

through me.

06. A Poem with You, Spring, the Broadcasting Authority & MiGs

I’m sleepy
and all my memories are falling on top of me,

little cut-out clichés
from some absurd parallel world.

I wonder how cold it is
in that pale white Canada.

my good friend Vlad Stănilă
writes from the capital
of an America obsessed with revenge:

“hey, man, where the fuck are you?
why aren’t you coming?”

meanwhile I’m flying through waxen dreams,
breathing the smell of kerosene
off the fuselages of airplanes
resting on the runway at Otopeni.

everything gets clogged up
in this homeland
wrapped in cocoa powder.

the National Broadcasting Council,
like some prudish housewife,
has put curlers in its hair
and is showing us the world
exactly as it pleases.

oh, fuck off.

behind the apartment blocks
a little boy is shouting
country, country, we want soldiers!

something is seriously wrong
with this picture.

MiGs are falling
into people’s backyards

while the television tells us,
day after day,
that we’re in NATO.

as if we’d made it into heaven.

where all the grass is green
and we take another drag,
float toward our green and gorgeous dreams,

on skis,
on rollerblades,
straight into bottomless abysses.

but I was going to tell you
about the smell of fresh flowers.

about how badly I want
a little of today’s sunshine on my skin.

about this sudden, ridiculous urge
to fall in love with you today.

to run through words,
invent gestures nobody’s ever tried,

hide inside glances,
inside the small electricity of touch.

I wanted to go out,
walk the streets for no particular reason,
celebrate the weather with them,

the faces of people
coming back to life in spring.

remember when I told you
that entire universes
keep generating themselves inside my head?

well, this is one of them.

and you’re the only one to blame
for the whole magnificent mess.

I dream of you
and thrash about like a condemned man
in the foam of the waves.

I sail beneath the arches of time
with a pistol to my temple

while Andrei decides
to call a television programme live on air.

Generation @.

a young woman answers
and politely informs him

it’s a rerun.

but everything here is a rerun.

the movies.
the news.
our lives.

Maya is out on the balcony
barking with her four-legged friends
on the other floors.

I’m not going to die today.

probably not tomorrow either.

although I should tell you
I’m not afraid of anything anymore.

out at sea,
glass ships are heading straight for me,

their holds full of oranges
bearing the faint imprint
of your temporary kiss.

and just to make the day complete,

some guy phones a morning television show
to tell the entire country,

live,

that last night

he dreamed he was Tarzan.

Notes: The reference to “fuck off” comes from the Romanian hip-hop group Paraziții. The television incidents were real.

07. A Sticker with Polar Bears & Jeeps

you move me every day.

you’re my concrete tragedy,
butterflies caught in mid-flight
by bullets made of air.

you hurt me in a thousand ways,
a thousand words
bewitched by autumn rain
around Amzei and Romană.

you smoke away my moments.

you’re my silent Goya,
painting moonlight
over all my nights.

come on,
let me give birth to lethal glances.

let me disappear
inside the whisper of your mouth.

let me cross, very carefully,
the warm and willing country
of your thighs.

I’ve been waiting for days
to play you something on the saxophone.

a little Frank Sinatra,
a lot of corazón.

I’ve practised.
honestly.

and I hope I can collect
those steel tears
from your sad winter eyes.

don’t lie to me.
don’t lie.

just sit there,
quietly weaving mysteries,

lay one small caress
across my temples.

amore mio,
I conjure you.

I ache for you,
oppress you,
surrender you.

and suddenly you’re younger
with emotion.

a girl again,
with silver breasts.

and you keep sticking little pictures
all over my days,

polar bears

and American Jeeps.

08. Fake Story_Love Story

come on.
let’s forge the future together.

with the full approval
of the great powers,

the free thinkers,

the leading producers
of television talk shows.

let’s fake it so beautifully
that by tomorrow
love can be ordered
from a full-colour catalogue,

page 29,

seasonal clothing.

available in several colours,
a wide range of styles,
sizes to suit everybody.

or better still,
order it online.

Visa.
American Express.
instant payment.

have love delivered
straight to the user’s inbox

along with the good news,

the not-so-good news,

the downright terrible news,

and all those special offers
and press agency updates
nobody asked for.

let’s fake our feelings too.

starting tomorrow.

no, wait.
why tomorrow?

tonight.

I’ll hate you.

I’ll look you straight in the face
and call you
the most cowardly,
impossible,
unmarketable bitch
I’ve ever met.

you’ll pretend I don’t exist.

that you’ve never known me.

that we were never together

at the seaside,

in the mountains,

in hospitals,

in cinemas.

you’ll get on with your life.

your lovers.
your university.
your jewellery.
your pancakes.

as if I’d never existed.

as if I didn’t hate you.

just for practice.

just for a moment.

come on,
let’s counterfeit nostalgia.

neutralise winter
with burning kisses.

let’s make love
right in front of death,

in the most intimate,
the most fantastically improbable
positions imaginable.

let death turn green with envy.

let it get bored
and leave us alone.

so we can keep carrying

our cross,

our memories,

our fantasies,

our private insanities.

so one day we can explain
to somebody else

just how important it can be

to fake certain things

that don’t seem
particularly important

at all.

09. Women, in the Morning…

in the morning
all women are beautiful.

in the morning
all women carry little doses of happiness
on their lips.

in the morning
all women have the traces of somebody’s hands
somewhere on their bodies.

in the morning
it’s a day like any other.

you lie around in the marital bed,

or your mistress’s bed,

or just some bed,
somewhere.

drink coffee.
shave with admirable consistency.
breathe in,
breathe out,
with great eloquence.

go shopping.

take a little tour
of the main boulevards.

maybe there’s something new.

maybe something will jump
into your face,
your eyes,
your arms.

hunting isn’t a vice.

it’s a hobby.
a drug.
a delicacy.

you make the necessary phone calls.

plan the rest of your day
with military precision.

meetings.
appointments.
places to be.
people to see.

you boil a few hot dogs.

wash the dishes
with genuine disgust.

drink your obligatory yoghurt.

in the morning
you can do absolutely anything.

you haven’t started anything yet.

it’s all about strategy,
feeling,
willpower,

your own particular mood.

in the morning
you can be ugly and sulky.

slam the phone down.
throw a stack of bills across the room.

feel sick.
have a toothache.
be in a thoroughly rotten mood.

in the morning
nothing has taken shape.

nothing has been decided.

you can drive.

take the tram.

stay exactly where you are.

you can still refuse anybody.

hide.

ignore the phone.

decline all invitations
to participate in reality.

the morning is just another ordinary day.

except it begins.

it doesn’t end.

it opens.

it doesn’t close.

it can mould itself around your desires

like a miniskirt
around a teenage girl’s hips.

morning is a jigsaw puzzle
still inside its box.

one thing is certain.

one thing is perfectly clear.

one thing
is not up for negotiation.

in the morning

all women

are beautiful.

10. Purple Long Story

dark-haired lady,
lovely young thing,

your legs go all the way to the moon.

your footsteps mean more to me
than Armstrong’s.

(you were busy admiring yourself
in shop windows.)

your ankle,
caught in the leather of a sandal,
woke up the animal in me.

outside it’s cold.
night.
a little frost.

dark-haired lady,
lovely young thing.

nothing new so far,
I hear you say.

another idiot in love with a ghost.
seriously.

the story’s old.
repetitive.
embarrassing.
borderline nauseating.

blah_blah_blah,
blah_blah_blah,

this and that
and et cetera.

but—

there’s something about this girl.

she has purple wrinkles.

purple fingernails.

purple eyebrows.

purple teeth.

a perfectly natural
purple smile.

her purple elbows
are different from each other.

the other one’s round.

she has purple skin.

a purple T-shirt.

a purple breast.

purple blood.

a little dog named Moover.

purple, obviously.

she drives a purple Fiat
into which she casually crams her lovers.

all of them different colours.

colours,

rainbows,

parrots,

once she even squeezed in a red blind man
because he had the face of a saint

and white eyes,

white blind eyes,

white eyes
like a blind saint.

but let’s get back to the point.

no more nonsense.
no more digressions.

because

she has purple skirts.

purple tights.

purple nerves.

gloves,
bracelets,
cigarettes,
lighters,
pens,
socks,
cassette tapes,
defects,
pacifiers,
tickets,
crucibles—

all purple.

she has a purple apartment

in a purple building

on a purple street

near a purple petrol station.

her eyes are purple.
pale purple.

only at night,
when she’s sleepy,
does she close them.

she has a purple belly button
inherited from a distant relative
out in the provinces.

a purple cactus.

a purple scarf.

a purple dream
that keeps changing its mind.

she has purple airs and graces,

purple tantrums,

purple candy,

purple doilies,

purple squares,

purple rectangles,

purple little geometrical problems,

purple moods
and purple whims.

she has, in short,

so many purple things
that listing them all
would take me an eternity.

dark-haired lady,
lovely young thing,

what a curious business
this complicated nature of yours.

your shoulders,
oval as olives,

are important to me.

vital, even.

more important than—

(by now you’d grown bored
and moved well past the shop windows.)

stupid, you say.
and dull on top of it.

nowhere near good,
let alone the ne plus ultra.

just another silly story
about some ordinary girl.

not Shakespeare.

not Baudelaire.

not even a decent tragedy.

but—

you know how it goes.

history repeating itself.

there’s something about this girl!

and so I go on,
bored with my own inventory,

listing everything she owns,

every single purple thing
belonging to the purple girl,

without noticing,

without the slightest idea,

that the young lady,
glancing into the shop windows,

had already set

those purple eyes

on me.
