ILARIE CORBU – Continuitate discontinuă
Bucharest, 1974 | Pixel Punk Records
01. Obiecte în repaus
Pe masă sunt trei obiecte.
Unul dintre ele nu există.
Celelalte două
își schimbă locul
de fiecare dată când privesc în altă parte.
Am încercat să le număr.
Numărul a rămas același.
Ordinea, nu.
În camera de alături
se măsoară distanța
dintre două întâmplări.
Instrumentele sunt precise.
Rezultatele diferă.
Un om intră.
Un altul iese.
Ușa nu participă
la niciunul dintre evenimente.
Există o regulă
pentru fiecare mișcare.
Există o excepție
pentru fiecare regulă.
Și undeva,
în afara sistemului,
un obiect continuă
să stea nemișcat.
Nu pentru că așteaptă.
Nu pentru că a uitat.
Ci pentru că mișcarea
nu îl privește.
Obiectele rămân.
Pozițiile se schimbă.
Observatorul
nu mai este necesar.

02. Teoria distanței
Între două puncte
există întotdeauna
o distanță.
Între două distanțe
nu există nimic precis.
Am așezat un scaun
la mijlocul camerei.
Dinspre ușă
părea mai aproape.
Dinspre fereastră,
mai departe.
Scaunul nu s-a mișcat.
Am trasat o linie
între mine și un obiect.
Linia era dreaptă.
Obiectul, indiferent.
Am repetat experiența
cu un alt om.
De data aceasta,
linia a dispărut
înainte să ajungă
la celălalt capăt.
Apropierea
nu este opusul depărtării.
Sunt două proprietăți
ale aceluiași spațiu.
Uneori,
un centimetru
ocupă întreaga încăpere.
Alteori,
o mie de kilometri
încap într-o propoziție.
Am încercat
să reduc distanța
la zero.
Rezultatul
a fost un punct.
Punctul
nu avea dimensiuni.
Dar ocupa
tot locul.
03. O formă de absență
Am observat
că unele lucruri
continuă să existe
și după ce dispar.
Nu în memorie.
Nu în imaginație.
Ci în felul
în care celelalte lucruri
își modifică poziția.
Pe masă
a rămas un loc liber.
Nimeni nu l-a ocupat.
Absența nu are greutate.
Și totuși,
uneori,
înclină suprafețele.
Nu produce sunet.
Dar schimbă
acustica încăperii.
Am făcut o probă.
Am închis toate ferestrele.
Am oprit toate aparatele.
În liniștea obținută
lipsea ceva.
Nu am putut stabili
ce anume.
Există spații
care nu pot fi umplute.
Nu din lipsă de materie.
Ci pentru că
forma lor
depinde de gol.
Un cerc
nu este doar linia
care îl închide.
Este și suprafața
pe care linia
o lasă liberă.
Am încercat
să reprezint absența.
Am desenat
un dreptunghi.
Apoi am șters
tot ce era în interior.
Pe hârtie
a rămas o formă.
Nu era goală.
04. Sistem închis
Am construit un sistem
din șapte elemente.
Fiecare element
avea o funcție.
Fiecare funcție
avea o limită.
Nimic nu putea intra.
Nimic nu putea ieși.
Am verificat
toate conexiunile.
Erau corecte.
În a treia zi
a apărut un element nou.
Nu avea origine.
Nu avea destinație.
Ocupa un spațiu
care nu fusese prevăzut.
Am refăcut calculele.
Rezultatul era identic.
Am eliminat elementul.
Au dispărut două.
Un sistem închis
nu poate produce
mai mult decât conține.
Aceasta era regula.
Am repetat-o
de șapte ori.
La a opta repetare
cuvintele
nu mai aveau
aceeași ordine.
Sensul rămăsese.
Sau ceva
care semăna
foarte bine cu el.
Am deschis sistemul.
Înăuntru
nu era nimic.
În afară
erau aceleași șapte elemente.
Le-am numărat.
Erau opt.
Am închis din nou.
De data aceasta
am rămas
înăuntru.
05. Memoria materialelor
Am separat materialele
după proprietățile lor.
Sticla.
Lemnul.
Fierul.
Hârtia.
Fiecare a primit
un număr.
Fiecare număr
a fost înscris
pe o suprafață diferită.
După un timp,
inscripțiile
nu mai corespundeau.
Am încălzit o bucată de fier.
Lungimea ei
s-a modificat.
Am răcit-o.
A revenit
aproape
la dimensiunea inițială.
Diferența
era prea mică
pentru a fi observată.
Dar suficientă
pentru a fi măsurată.
O foaie de hârtie
poate fi îndoită
de mai multe ori.
La fiecare îndoire
apare o linie.
Linia nu poate fi ștearsă
fără modificarea
suprafeței.
Am întins hârtia.
Era din nou plană.
Nu mai era
aceeași.
Am repetat operația
cu toate materialele.
Rezultatele
au fost diferite.
Am schimbat ordinea.
Rezultatele
au rămas diferite.
Am eliminat
toate variabilele.
A rămas
o singură proprietate.
Niciun material
nu revine complet
la starea inițială.
06. Variabile independente
Am ales trei variabile.
Prima depindea de timp.
A doua, de poziție.
A treia
nu depindea de nimic.
Le-am așezat
în aceeași ecuație.
Rezultatul
nu s-a modificat.
Am schimbat ordinea.
Nici atunci.
Există relații
care nu pot fi demonstrate.
Două lucruri
se modifică simultan.
Nu se ating.
Nu comunică.
Nu există
o cauză comună.
Și totuși,
la fiecare repetare,
diferența dintre ele
rămâne constantă.
Am eliminat
prima variabilă.
Celelalte două
au continuat
să se modifice.
Am eliminat-o
și pe a doua.
Ultima
a rămas neschimbată.
Nu era o constantă.
Era doar
singura variabilă
pe care nu o înțelegeam.
Am închis caietul.
Ecuația
rămăsese neterminată.
Pe pagina următoare
era trecut
rezultatul.
Nu exista
nicio demonstrație.
07. Continuitate discontinuă
Există o linie
pe care n-o vedem.
Trece prin lucruri,
dar nu le aparține.
Se oprește o clipă,
apoi merge mai departe.
Nu știm dacă-i aceeași,
nu știm dacă se împarte.
Am urmărit o mișcare
până la capătul ei.
Acolo începea alta,
aproape la fel.
Între ele era
un interval foarte mic.
Destul cât să încapă
ceva nedefinit.
Continuitate discontinuă,
o ordine fără sfârșit.
Tot ce rămâne se schimbă,
tot ce se schimbă a rămas.
Tot ce rămâne…
Tot ce se schimbă…
Am încercat să despart
momentul de moment.
Dar fiecare secundă
avea un precedent.
Am încercat să le-adun,
să le pun laolaltă.
Între prima și ultima
era mereu încă una.
Continuitate discontinuă,
o ordine fără sfârșit.
Tot ce rămâne se schimbă,
tot ce se schimbă a rămas.
nu opresc și timpul.
Dacă opresc timpul,
nu mai există mișcare.

ILARIE CORBU — PROVISIONAL STRUCTURES
Bucharest, 1974 | Pixel Punk Records
01. Objects at Rest
There are three objects on the table.
One of them does not exist.
The other two
change places
every time I look away.
I tried to count them.
The number remained the same.
The order did not.
In the adjoining room
they are measuring the distance
between two events.
The instruments are precise.
The results differ.
One man enters.
Another leaves.
The door takes no part
in either event.
There is a rule
for every movement.
There is an exception
to every rule.
And somewhere,
outside the system,
an object continues
to remain motionless.
Not because it is waiting.
Not because it has forgotten.
But because movement
does not concern it.
The objects remain.
Their positions change.
The observer
is no longer necessary.
02. The Theory of Distance
Between two points
there is always
a distance.
Between two distances
there is nothing precise.
I placed a chair
in the middle of the room.
From the doorway
it seemed closer.
From the window,
farther away.
The chair had not moved.
I drew a line
between myself and an object.
The line was straight.
The object, indifferent.
I repeated the experiment
with another person.
This time,
the line disappeared
before reaching
the other end.
Closeness
is not the opposite of distance.
They are two properties
of the same space.
Sometimes,
a single centimeter
occupies the entire room.
At other times,
a thousand kilometers
fit inside a sentence.
I tried
to reduce the distance
to zero.
The result
was a point.
The point
had no dimensions.
Yet it occupied
all the space.
03. A Form of Absence
I have noticed
that certain things
continue to exist
even after they disappear.
Not in memory.
Not in imagination.
But in the way
the other things
change their positions.
On the table
an empty space remained.
No one occupied it.
Absence has no weight.
And yet,
sometimes,
it tilts surfaces.
It makes no sound.
But it changes
the acoustics of the room.
I conducted a test.
I closed all the windows.
I switched off every machine.
In the resulting silence
something was missing.
I could not determine
exactly what.
There are spaces
that cannot be filled.
Not for lack of matter.
But because
their shape
depends on emptiness.
A circle
is not merely the line
that encloses it.
It is also the area
the line
leaves unoccupied.
I tried
to represent absence.
I drew
a rectangle.
Then I erased
everything inside it.
On the paper
a shape remained.
It was not empty.
04. Closed System
I constructed a system
of seven elements.
Each element
had a function.
Each function
had a limit.
Nothing could enter.
Nothing could leave.
I checked
all the connections.
They were correct.
On the third day
a new element appeared.
It had no origin.
It had no destination.
It occupied a space
that had not been anticipated.
I recalculated everything.
The result was identical.
I removed the element.
Two disappeared.
A closed system
cannot produce
more than it contains.
That was the rule.
I repeated it
seven times.
On the eighth repetition
the words
no longer appeared
in the same order.
The meaning remained.
Or something
that resembled it
very closely.
I opened the system.
Inside
there was nothing.
Outside
were the same seven elements.
I counted them.
There were eight.
I closed it again.
This time
I remained
inside.
05. The Memory of Materials
I separated the materials
according to their properties.
Glass.
Wood.
Iron.
Paper.
Each was assigned
a number.
Each number
was inscribed
on a different surface.
After a while,
the inscriptions
no longer corresponded.
I heated a piece of iron.
Its length
changed.
I cooled it.
It returned
almost
to its original dimensions.
The difference
was too small
to be observed.
But sufficient
to be measured.
A sheet of paper
can be folded
several times.
With every fold
a line appears.
The line cannot be erased
without altering
the surface.
I unfolded the paper.
It was flat again.
It was no longer
the same.
I repeated the procedure
with all the materials.
The results
were different.
I changed the order.
The results
remained different.
I eliminated
all the variables.
Only one property
remained.
No material
ever returns completely
to its original state.
06. Independent Variables
I selected three variables.
The first depended on time.
The second, on position.
The third
depended on nothing.
I placed them
in the same equation.
The result
did not change.
I changed their order.
Not even then.
There are relationships
that cannot be demonstrated.
Two things
change simultaneously.
They do not touch.
They do not communicate.
There is
no common cause.
And yet,
with every repetition,
the difference between them
remains constant.
I eliminated
the first variable.
The other two
continued
to change.
I eliminated
the second one as well.
The last
remained unchanged.
It was not a constant.
It was merely
the only variable
I did not understand.
I closed the notebook.
The equation
remained unfinished.
On the following page
the result
was written down.
There was
no proof.
07. Discontinuous Continuity
There is a line
we cannot see.
It passes through things,
but belongs to none of them.
It stops for a moment,
then moves on.
We do not know if it’s the same,
we do not know if it divides.
I followed a movement
to its very end.
There, another began,
almost the same.
Between them
was a very small interval.
Just enough to contain
something undefined.
Discontinuous continuity,
an order without end.
Everything that remains is changing,
everything that changes has remained.
Everything that remains…
Everything that changes…
I tried to separate
one moment from another.
But every second
had a precedent.
I tried to gather them,
to bring them all together.
Between the first and the last
there was always one more.
Discontinuous continuity,
an order without end.
Everything that remains is changing,
everything that changes has remained.
I do not stop time as well.
If I stop time,
movement no longer exists.
