Povestea lui Manolache / The Story of Manolache

zero.

English version

Dear pupils and students… today… I don’t really feel like giving a lecture after all… I simply had a difficult day yesterday, and this morning my car broke down again on the way to school, so I actually had to leave it about two kilometres away — near the little grocery store in the neighboring district.

Actually… I stopped at the shop for a moment and bought myself a little pastry, and then, eating it as I walked this way, some very old, very dusty memories came to visit me.

I think I became a little emotional during the last few hundred metres, wiping my fingers with the modest paper napkin, as I kept thinking about my school years and the Romanian Language classes for which we studied from textbooks carefully coordinated and controlled by the Romanian Communist Party.

You should have seen the strange literature we had to read, summarize, and sometimes even memorize. We were actually given tests on this kind of material. But since I really loved reading anything, anytime, anywhere, I enjoyed every such literary work, even those written for propaganda. In the end, an avid reader knows how to recognize the talent of a good narrator, regardless of the political system in which that narrator happens to live.

The Story of Manolache

A bizarre little sketch, no more than two or three pages long, is the story of Manolache.

Manolache is newly employed at a state institution. Now, I no longer remember whether it was actually a nuclear power plant, but it was certainly some extremely important industrial facility belonging to the Romanian Communist State.

Actually, let me start from the beginning.

In the opening paragraphs, Manolache is described as being on probation. For days on end, he is made to sit in front of an enormous control panel, with all sorts of sensors, little lights, probably levers and buttons. He is a simple man, without higher education. His patience, however, becomes an important asset during the days in which he is being tested.

As I vaguely remember it, his potential employers were watching him from outside the room while keeping him there for hours in front of the control panel, without giving him any explanation.

In the end, Manolache passes the test through the simplicity, honesty, and patience he has demonstrated. Not a trace of irritation, pointless questioning, embarrassment; not a single moment in which he asks — or asks himself — unnecessary questions about himself, the team interviewing him, the Institution, the System.

The author glorifies him, probably in accordance with the general direction of children’s propaganda at the time: a man who comes from the “people,” sincere but not naive, present but not inconvenient, attentive but not intrusive, skillful but not entrepreneurial (in the sense we understand that word today).

The man simply remained in the place, function, and role that had been “assigned,” “intended,” or “created” for him by the System, without becoming, even for a second, a challenge to it.

Well, for me — the person who, while reading, was also trying to visualize the whole scenario — the story had colorful, bright, beautiful shades, although obviously it was all a little unreal.

Perhaps a little illustration in colored pencils helped, placed there by some skilled children’s illustrator of the time. A rather naive drawing, as I remember noticing — and finding slightly irritating.

If this particular type of person could ever really have existed, I am almost certain that I must have wondered, at least instinctively, even back in 1987 or 1988, when I was in the fifth grade:

Who is this Manolache, and why does he seem so obedient, paradoxically so natural, and yet so utterly programmed?

You cannot help wondering how he had lived through the years before that interview. What kind of life had he lived until then?

Could he have had a childhood full of adventures, an adolescence filled with romantic complications, youthful loves, good times, walks, football games, parties?

Was it really normal to promote such models of human beings to younger generations? Are they, in fact, useful to a System, whatever that System may be, either as proposed human prototypes or even as (im)possibly functional citizens in the end?

With the mind I have today, the problem seems somewhat more complicated to me. In fact, the first question that comes to mind is this: “How much freedom do we have to move arbitrarily within a System?” (With the immediate conclusion — you guessed it, dear pupils and students — that the answer differs for each of these Systems, at least on this particular matter.)

And then, how obedient can we be, do we want to be, or do we need to be so that, in the end, even the System itself can no longer find a viable function for us — anywhere, ever?

In this situation, it would seem that the uselessness of the “Manolache” model ends up not only challenging the System through its very existence or presence, but also demanding, ultimately, its complete exclusion from it. The System seems to compromise itself every time it tries to push Control, Propaganda, the Shaping of Human Personality, or the Shaping of Its Role in Society toward perfection.

Today, I think that the “Manolache” model nevertheless remains an idealized prototype, something that could never be attained and perhaps could not even be understood without a certain dose of mature irony. Surely, a good Romanian Language teacher would have taught the lesson, even under Communism, with a subtle hint of doubt or even sarcasm in their voice. Perhaps even a little tenderness, directed toward those who were perhaps too absorbed in reading or studying.

You might say that, once fixed within the child’s mental landscape, memory, and personal history, this “model” was supposed to become a reference point around which the future citizen would carry out a long ritual of negotiation with the System, taking it as a point of reference.

But now we ask ourselves: what kind of reference point could Manolache have been, and for whom? Perhaps, forty years later, with my dusty memory, I can answer for myself and perhaps, partially and speculatively, for other human types observable around me at that time.

If I remember correctly, none of my classmates resonated with this strange little work. Nobody was interested in studying propagandistic literature, few studied at home, answers were incomplete, and there was little involvement or interest. And, to be honest, no teacher expected any trace of enthusiasm from us either. More than that, you were considered slightly bizarre if you lingered too long over such a thing.

As for me, associating the beautifully colored illustrations with the paradoxical characters — practically impossible to represent in the mind of a ten- or eleven-year-old — I spent a long time thinking about the meaning of the story. You have the evidence here and now, dear readers.

Perhaps only a few nostalgic souls still keep, somewhere of honor in a library or inside a forgotten chest in a basement, the Romanian Language textbook with its cardboard covers that some of us carried back and forth to school for years.

Returning to my sense of wonder during those lessons, those days, and later, sporadically and episodically, we can still think about the context, after all.

1) I was interested in human creativity: illustration, the author’s talent as a narrator and, why not admit it, perhaps a somewhat precocious curiosity about everything that surrounded me: classmates, teachers, textbooks, clothes, human types, rules for functioning, rules for existing.

Naturally, all of this can be attributed to the need of a young person — a child, after all — to calculate, probably through a mixture of instinct and emerging reason, possible trajectories of development in the Future, within the System.

2) The teachers were already experienced, tired of propaganda, tired from years of functioning within this System. They had certainly become cynical long before, and that was not necessarily a flaw for which they should be blamed, but rather a systemic one.

Certainly, not every teacher has unlimited energy to guide…

…the particular cases of students who were too curious, too enthusiastic. And, in the end, why would they have done it, as long as the very text they were supposed to study seemed useless, merely part of the programming language of Propaganda?

A strange thought nevertheless brings back another sensation from those moments. Hmm, I wondered, does the person standing at the front of the classroom really no longer see anything interesting or beautiful in such a work? Why the irony, why the detachment, why this distancing from the text, from the Textbook? I also felt, back then, that the teacher was distancing himself perhaps too visibly, too obviously, from this particular type of author, someone who, after the Revolution, would often be described as a “proletcultist” artist.

I put my hand to my temple, staring seemingly absent-mindedly out of the window. Why would you need to “distance yourself” from something like this in front of schoolchildren, as long as, apparently, not only was none of them interested in such an attitude, but they were also far too immature to understand the relationships between adult citizens within an old, complicated, and even decadent Totalitarian System?

3) On the other hand, your function as an educator within the System has to work; otherwise, you cannot justify your presence there or your Salary. You cannot simply “return” to the State, at the end of a school year or at the end of middle school, students who lack logic, understanding, or the ability to interpret, ultimately, context, human character, and relationships — both among themselves and with the adults they might encounter later in life.

How can this delicate balance be maintained within decent limits: between officially performing your profession, with an apparent, visible or invisible allegiance to the System, and genuinely being involved in the development of children? And why? For what purpose?

And, in the end, what does “decent” actually mean within that period, that order, that System? Was it “decent” to present yourself as a dissident or critic, as an active pawn in a strange, atypical, invisible “Resistance”? Or, at the other extreme, was it “decent” to pretend that you understood nothing and teach, using a variety of ways to conceal your true attitude, a proletcultist text accompanied by a naive, colorful illustration? Or perhaps you were supposed to navigate between these options?

Probably the answer is “none of the above.” Once again, we return to our old excuse: “that’s how things were.” The flaw had become so deeply assimilated into the almost automatic functioning of Communism, like a machine that had slipped out of control, that any punctual explanation seems ultimately meaningless.

I am not talking about “responsibility” at all, but about the ways in which these flaws spread over forty-five years, like an extraordinarily complex structure of causes and secondary and tertiary effects, reverberations and infinite reflections within the minds of everyone who lived through that period. Obviously, the echoes of those times may not have faded even today.

So, in the final paragraph, dear pupils and students, what do we actually take away from today’s discussion?

This little essay is, in the end, another text assembled by a man with creative ambitions. And, if we are to be honest… the author of the little story about Manolache, the ideal prototype of the worker under Communism, also had his own small influence somewhere along the way, alongside hundreds of other authors with whose help I spent years practicing the art of storytelling and written expression. Naturally, many teachers also contributed to this, through the thousands upon thousands of hours we spent together.

Some influences seem to remain with us for years and years, perhaps for an entire lifetime. Others pass before our eyes as if they had never existed, only to suddenly return to us sometimes, almost miraculously.

To calculate every kind of information down to infinitesimal percentages, to identify its sources, to rationalize excessively, to interpret and reconstruct formative trajectories that may have lasted for decades is, naturally, at the very least an absurd attitude.

Apart from our own minds, our own memories, our experiences stored within structures consisting of billions of neurons and connections can never be accessed from the outside. One might say that no one could have been with us every second of our lives; no one can truly calculate the causes, effects, or reverberations of our attitudes and actions.

And, to end this little essay on a humorous note, we might rhetorically ask ourselves whether even the “Manolache” prototype could have been such an element.

Without history, without memory, without generating any kind of random noise within the System, without any excess ever recorded anywhere, he becomes the easiest variable to calculate within our complicated equation.

What could the result of this calculation be, dear pupils and students?

Well, well? Does the answer come to mind more easily now?

Let me make the calculation easier for you, my dear ones, because I want to go and retrieve my car while there is still daylight outside:

zero.
