Acum vreo 3 ani, mama și tata mi-au povestit o întâmplare dintre cele mai triste, stupefiante. Doi cireși imensi, plantați probabil în urmă cu zeci de ani, s-au uscat brusc, în decurs de câteva zile.
Tata și mama s-au necăjit enorm. Cred că toți copacii din grădină au fost plantați cu grijă, chiar și înainte de Revoluție. Există acolo o varietate de pomi fructiferi de toate felurile, nu numai pentru fructe, ci și pentru umbră și aer curat.
Evident, cineva a făcut ceva în acest sens. Nu e posibil ca doi copaci de mărimea asta să se usuce în același timp, într-un proces atât de agresiv.
La câteva zile după eveniment, am mers cu mama să ne interesăm dacă nu se poate face o anchetă, la sediul organizației de Mediu din Baia Mare. Din câte am înțeles, trebuiau prelevate probe din sol și mers la un laborator specializat care, din câte îmi aduc aminte, nu prea exista la noi în oraș.
Am abandonat amândoi ideea.
Cel sau cei care ar fi putut face așa ceva au rămas, deci, necunoscuți. M-am tot gândit la această întâmplare. Care urmau să fie consecințele?
a) Instaurarea unui climat de angoasă și neîncredere în comunitatea locală, în sat.
b) Verificarea capacității de reacție a proprietarilor — adică a părinților mei și, poate, chiar a familiei.
c) Crearea unei stări de paranoia și neîncredere între vecini.
d) Poate chiar verificarea existenței unui sistem de supraveghere în zonă și a posibilității ca un asemenea agresor să poată fi identificat.
În mod cert, dacă cineva chiar a condus o asemenea „operațiune”, nu a acționat personal și a delegat pe cineva în acest sens. Aș intui chiar că „delegatul” nu putea fi decât un personaj minor într-o schemă mai complexă. Această posibilă agresiune, oblică oarecum, asupra unor copaci și nu direct asupra unor oameni rămâne o metodă insidioasă.
Ea a creat, din acel moment, suspiciune și senzația că posesorii sunt vulnerabili și fără protecție. Ba mai mult, există și o formă de sarcasm extrem inclusă în actul de agresiune, prin inducerea unui raționament paralel, reflexiv, între simbolismul copacului și cel al bătrânului.
Faptul că pomii au fost distruși ar fi putut constitui și o demonstrație de forță, și o agresiune, și o „invitație” sau o formă de „predicție” sau, bineînțeles, toate la un loc.
În mod cert, analizând acest eveniment punctual, se poate observa că în spatele lui nu poate sta decât o inteligență speculativă, cu multă experiență în manipularea minților oamenilor și, evident, cu intenții extrem de distructive. Plus o formă de planificare a unor potențiale forme de agresiune viitoare.
În mod cert, alte efecte posibile s-au obținut și au existat discuții pe această temă, nu numai în comunitatea locală, ci și cu ecouri în alte zone din împrejurimi. Probabil că îngrijorarea se va fi instalat mai departe, se va fi analizat întâmplarea și se vor fi produs și unele forme de interogare.
La limita dintre înțelepciune, rațiune și capacitatea de a acționa măcar investigativ și opusul — acela de a ignora întâmplarea, fenomenul și de a se îndepărta de sursa unor potențiale probleme — se pot găsi, bineînțeles, și alte tipuri de atitudine și comportament.

About three years ago, my mother and father told me about one of the saddest, most baffling incidents. Two enormous cherry trees, probably planted decades ago, suddenly dried up within the space of a few days.
My parents were deeply upset. I believe all the trees in the garden had been planted with care, some of them even before the Revolution. There is a wide variety of fruit trees there, of all kinds, planted not only for their fruit, but also for shade and clean air.
Obviously, someone had done something to them. It seemed impossible that two trees of that size could have dried up at the same time, through such an aggressive process.
A few days after the event, my mother and I went to the local Environmental organization in Baia Mare to ask whether an investigation could be carried out. As far as I understood, soil samples would have had to be collected and sent to a specialized laboratory which, as I remember, did not really exist in our city.
We both abandoned the idea.
Whoever might have done such a thing therefore remained unknown. I kept thinking about the incident. What might the consequences have been?
a) The establishment of a climate of anxiety and distrust within the local community, in the village.
b) Testing the owners’ capacity to react — that is, my parents’ capacity to respond, and perhaps even that of the family as a whole.
c) Creating paranoia and distrust among the neighbors.
d) Perhaps even checking whether there was any surveillance system in the area and whether such an aggressor could potentially be identified.
Certainly, if someone really had orchestrated such an “operation,” they would not have acted personally, but would have delegated someone to carry it out. I would even venture to suggest that this “delegate” could only have been a minor figure within a more complex scheme. This possible act of aggression, somewhat oblique in nature, directed at trees rather than directly at people, remains an insidious method.
From that moment onward, it created suspicion and the feeling that the owners were vulnerable and unprotected. Moreover, there is an element of extreme sarcasm embedded in the act of aggression itself, through the induction of a parallel, reflexive line of reasoning between the symbolism of the tree and that of the elderly person.
The destruction of the trees could have constituted a demonstration of power, an act of aggression, an “invitation,” or a form of “prediction” — or, naturally, all of these at once.
Certainly, when analyzing this particular event, one can observe that behind it there could only have been a speculative intelligence with extensive experience in manipulating people’s minds and, evidently, extremely destructive intentions. Along with some form of planning for potential future acts of aggression.
Certainly, other possible effects may also have been achieved, and discussions on the subject probably took place not only within the local community but also with echoes reaching other surrounding areas. The concern may have spread further; the incident may have been analyzed, and various forms of questioning may have followed.
At the boundary between wisdom, reason, and the capacity to act — even if only investigatively — and their opposite, namely the decision to ignore the incident, the phenomenon, and to distance oneself from the source of potential problems, there are, naturally, other possible forms of attitude and behavior.
