English version
We’re in 2013, late August. I find myself in a terrible mix of anxiety, extreme anguish and depression at my sister’s house in Bucharest. I’m pacing in place as in any other extreme states up to that point, wandering chaotically through the house, trying to explain to myself the causes of these states.
On my desk sat a digital camera I’d received from my brother-in-law Radu, probably a Nikon. For many years I’d wanted to start studying image — photography and then video production — but I’d never really found calm and mental clarity, enough stillness to experiment sufficiently, over the long term.
So there I was, deciding to act, as usual on instinct. I roamed Bucharest for 2-3 days to gather enough props for my first attempt in the visual field. I kept going through “art supplies” stores buying whatever was cheapest, most accessible.
As I usually did, I had no plan laid out in advance. I stand in front of the shelves and negotiate several things in my mind at once: will what I’m about to buy be coherent — in plastic quality, symbolism, form — with the other objects I’ve already acquired? Will I go beyond the simple, clear concept that I was already evaluating, calculating and projecting into the near future while circulating between stores? I knew I wouldn’t — I had to harmonize everything under a stylistically acceptable form as a work of visual art. And not, dear readers, out of any conviction other than that we can never afford to display kitsch, oversaturated works, visual mallware.
What I was about to do — the stop-motion video — was meant as a clarification of the situations I suspected, sensed, or vaguely remembered having gone through in life up to that point. With an extreme, momentary naivety, I hoped that this “message in a bottle” (this time not specialized television but YouTube) would be decoded by ordinary people, perhaps experienced artists, creatives like me who need the media they work in to be constantly freed from artists less faithful to the creed I subscribed to, have subscribed to, and always will: art is the manifestation of humanism, not of hatred, envy, manipulation of any kind. If more and more of us work in the service of the dark side of man, then the fate of artist communities is in serious danger.
There was also a statistical, probabilistic calculation involved. The video was meant to operate for an undefined period, as a kind of questioning of people’s minds everywhere. Honestly, at the time I didn’t imagine how many minds would put their neurons to work decoding my content, or how many would be ill-intentioned. And how many of the well-intentioned ones would have known how to interpret every detail through to the end, would have had something to say about it and, in the end, would have been able to act. In the end, few people know how to oppose dark forces, for lack of experience in the field, education, technique, dexterity and, indeed, reliable information, verifiable straight from the source.
The risk I was exposing myself to was then probably poorly assessed: I also had the strong belief that the collective subconscious processes non-verbal information in parallel with the rational layer, and that my video “installation” would function in perpetuity, decoding methods of manipulation, making these schemes explicit and constantly shedding light on these extremely dark cases into which, as I illustrated in the video, I seemed to have stepped rather early. Of course, these schemes describe only what I had seen and lived in my personal life up to that point, in synthetic language, condensing into movement, form, disharmony even mentalities, characters, networking and, why not, even approximate movement, reduced to what I could do at that moment, with what I had available.
The stop-motion technique was chosen because I had no experience at all in fluid motion. I didn’t have image stabilizers either — my hand shook regardless. I also bought a white photo backdrop and borrowed a tripod from my brother-in-law Radu.
For the curious, the budget of this video was a maximum of 1000 lei. The most expensive item, as far as I recall, was the photo backdrop — around 500 lei. I remain attached to the small plaster figurines bought from a small shop dedicated to fine-art students — casts of classical forms, meant for studying and drawing in anatomy classes.
As far as I remember, the piece was made in under 2 days, feverishly, on the run, frame by frame. In the end there are probably a few hundred photos that I edited in Vegas Studio — I’d already bought the personal license — and I again used whatever effects I had available “by default” to add a technological layer through colorization, editing dynamics, framing, etc. I’ve always considered that working as spontaneously, as intuitively as possible brings out — not only through imperceptible gestures, momentary inspiration, probing the unconscious and immaterial vision — details from memory that the rational mind isn’t always aware of.
I also drew on my long experience in fine arts, drawing, texture, color: each scene tries to be correctly framed, the compositional axes and schemes as elegant as possible, somewhere between respecting classical canons and finding the disharmony of those who not only don’t follow them but also contest, refute and, ultimately, annihilate their authenticity. A sad realization that we’re not really in a form of “digital renaissance” and something else too: a strange form of “medieval technocracy” on a multitude of levels.
And yet, if I hadn’t started this long journey into the study of visual arts and distribution networks, inserting the production into the collective mind, I wouldn’t later have gained the feedback needed to deconstruct today’s, yesterday’s, and probably future media-manipulation systems. Even now, many aspects of these networks remain unknown to me, and probably to many others. Up to that point I’d only created audio, posting on Soundcloud, and I suspected that in music only certain “specialists” know how to “decode” (partially, of course), interpret and propagate further — according to taste, interest, talent and training, the network they belong to, their own vision or projection onto the content they analyze.
Come along, dear readers, let’s follow step by step, frame by frame, what I did in this video:
- The clip opens with the title, on a black background made in the open-source software “Inkscape”: the title is surrounded by a quickly drawn outline, a kind of statement that yes, you see, not all art is “hacks” through videography — there’s also graphics, movement of the hand, of the graphics tablet, etc.
Some might interpret this image as “a crypt / a tomb,” but the oblique line above suggests the creator’s intention to open up this symbolic composition: to practically “come out” of the tomb. Out of isolation, out of darkness (which is in fact what this video wanted to be — a stylistic “blow” to the lid of the “crypt,” lol).
- There follows a short clip downloaded from the internet from an open-source, freeware source: “Unregistered Hypercam.” It was a public inquiry: why did I, the creative, feel at the time like an “unregistered camera,” like an observer somehow cast outside the “system,” which, anyway, in my opinion, also contained other independent observers, unregistered in the “system of media corruption?”
- The next shot, brief, shows 2 fashion mannequins, perfect, beautiful, minimalist: symbolizing my parents. I imagined myself in the video as that encrypted wooden puzzle, impossible to take apart and impossible to recover: the work of the system, of the educators who, as I’ll detail in my future AI-assisted films, kept abusing me and Paula, for reasons still unknown to me.
In my memory my parents remain two extremely beautiful examples of good taste, good sense, moral integrity evident in every aesthetic choice fixed in every photo in my memory box. People without financial resources who knew, through work, study and intuition based on a rich inheritance from their parents, from the old generations of Maramureș peasants, how to carve out a life within the communist system, full of hope that they would have a future, descendants, family, continuity.
- The next shot approximately symbolizes the period spent at the music school in Baia Mare. The little wooden puzzle, I sensed, would have been decoded and taken apart into its component pieces by my heroes of the time, symbolized by classical-style statues. I instinctively chose the pink feathers in the décor, as a kind of symbol of the artistic establishment’s soft methods of verification, correction and action during communism. They can be interpreted either as methods of investigation, of subtle interrogation, but also as methods of acting insidiously, stealthily, with great attention to detail.
- Then we’re in the high school years: the plastic mannequin head, for me, suggested the male authority figure, acting like a “punker.” But, of course, the establishment’s punker doesn’t act violently, but elegantly, minimalistically, dominating the scene undeniably (just like a model, a mannequin). We also have in the composition the female authority figure, unquestionable, the true classical model, absolute holiness, but also the soft part of the education system, closely watching the movements of the little figurines still in the making. A Rubik’s cube enters the scene, alongside other pieces of other shapes, carrying other symbolism, as any motley collective of high schoolers would. Would anyone have known how to solve the Rubik’s cube at that time? That remains a rhetorical question for readers.
- We then enter the period at the Faculty of Architecture: the composition includes tubular drawing sheets, set vertically — a symbol of the fact that here, in this institution, work matters and “elevates the person” (normally, work should concern only one’s own development, study, and that’s about it). The partial anatomical fragments (eye, mouth, ear) show us that the authority figures “share” their influence among themselves, listening, watching, disseminating information like a group with an invisible, undetectable command center. Of course, I used these plaster casts as a form of irony: no one, in fact, is perfect in any institution, in any network, and setting oneself up as the perfect, unquestionable authority figure is in fact ridiculous. I don’t think anyone can or knows how to consider themselves the ideal Platonic figure. Leaving room for doubt, studying, evaluating impartially and rationally should be the first aim by which the employees of a state institution, and not only, ought to act.
I amused myself a bit creating the little character with a cone on its head — an allusion to the cartoon “Oblio,” which some of us still know from the ’80s. In this film “Oblio” is banished from his community and family just because, you see, he was too idealistic, naive and fair in the game of triangle. The Count’s son grew jealous of him on the spot, reported him to his father who, with great influence with the Emperor, wove an entire scheme of public manipulation, demanding the “pointless” child (without a point) be banished from the city. In such a tragic yet idealized narrative, Oblio nonetheless has somewhere to disappear to, following an initiatory path until his return home. After many experiences transposed into a surreal register, the child finally gains a “Point.” Whether this is a happy or a sad ending remains for each reader to decide for themselves.
- Now we move to the next scene. Our central character, this “Oblio” of local groups of every kind of interest, no longer has anywhere to go: there’s no Pointless Forest, no Rockman, no Merry, Fat Ladies. There’s only his private space — his own home.
Here we see the “mask” — symbol of the “social mask” that must now be questioned, in the isolation imposed by these forces. In the background stand 2 panes of glass — symbolizing what Romanians call the “media space” (glass, colloquially). One is already extremely old and oxidized (perhaps a symbol of the old cultural establishment that came with us before the Revolution) and the one behind, cleaner (a question, perhaps even a statement: could it be that this dirty “glass” is being propped up and is covering another one? And if so, where is this apparently clean “transparency”?)
While the subject questions the psychological issue of social identity, of public image (of the “persona,” in specialized language), we see that small wooden cubelets appear in his personal space — a symbol for actors, less sophisticated pawns, more active than contemplative, who “help” along this process on the go. A process to be followed by any intelligent, cultured person, as long as it unfolds in conditions of quiet, calm, without any form of aggression, perhaps alongside a talented and dedicated therapist.
In this period of introspection we see how the author, or the central symbolic character (even the undersigned, dear readers), recalls memories, evaluates context, movements of actors, pawns, media language, trying to make probabilistic calculations. You see, here I used simple rubber puzzle pieces, for preschoolers — of course, with multiple meaning: the subject of our narrative saw all these “movements” as ridiculous childishness. At the same time he also behaved like a delicate preschooler.
We also have here a schematized anatomical form of a female character — symbolizing the fact that the subject of the narrative tried to understand the anatomy, the physiology of the opposite sex as well. Of course, our subject — even the undersigned — had some notions about these subtle mechanisms that dominate human existence from the very beginnings of life on Earth: after all, we still have a primitive instinct on which, over time, we build a form of rationalization and understanding of the world, of our body, through ourselves and through interactions with others. Sexuality is indeed for some a form of natural evolution, of union and communion, while for others it can become a weapon of manipulation (and not only that).
Unfortunately, in extreme cases, a character’s sexuality ends up being exploited by so many interest groups that it not only has to be inhibited but becomes impossible to express. What’s more, it would seem completely ridiculous or, with enough manipulation and recontextualization, could be reinterpreted as abuse. Naturally, as usual, those who abuse at first need to justify their abuses by throwing “blame” onto their “target,” or by seeking other potential victims or allies.
- In the next shot, after this early stage of self- and context-study (and of self within context), the subject of our narrative returns to the institutional space, accompanied by new symbolic elements. It seems the little actors who had in the meantime visited the character’s personal space or other spaces (already explained in earlier shots) gathered and interpreted more and more information. The scenes begin to illustrate, repetitively, the same phenomenon of feedback, contagion and redistribution of information.
- Well, the central character is already someone else: a Rubik’s cube instead of a head (still unsolved) and the rubber shapes forming the body. What do we understand at this point, dear readers? Well, our character no longer exists in its original form, but is exclusively the work of many forms of information manipulation up to that point. A bizarre, quasi-public character built from opinions, partial information, gossip, manipulations and third-party investments with various types of vectors of intent or justification.
At this point the undersigned — since it’s only about us here — appears “on the glass” (we have a shot here where the little man “presents” himself, close up, to viewers across the whole country). This is, of course, about the moments when I produced electronic music, in the late ’90s. Of course, I personally didn’t appear as an image on the screens. My music appeared, orchestral at its core, which contains, according to my intention at that moment, in artistic & technical language, the state of the moment, of the day (affective, rational, plus a form of relating to context — local, national and even global, as much as I could understand at that time).
Of course, my dears, we mustn’t be naive and think that the actors and pawns in these contexts didn’t lend an ear to these constructions. I’d even dare think they put their headphones on and analyzed the production in detail. Surely not all these ears understood everything, just as there will have been others who were excessively attentive. How it was then explained to the wider public, to those in the know, can be sensed and seen even today. Of course, an overwhelming proportion of the general public are non-experts, or even completely tone-deaf to it, or, God forgive me, even interest groups who know how to divert any creative intent into its very “opposite” (or thereabouts). Whether they had, or still have today, destructive intentions and the capacity to gather followers and accomplices for this purpose is, again, something to be studied and discussed.
- We enter the next scene: our character lies alone in the house, feet “up.” He seems to be in a state of almost clichéd contemplation, like consumers of any kind of substance. If we look at the image as a spectator, the viewer sees him smiling euphorically. But if we do an exercise of imagination and step “into the scene, into the film” and look at him from the front, his “mouth,” symbolized by the letter “D,” shows revulsion, disillusionment, depression. It seems the character realized too late that experiments of any kind are no longer worth it.
- We re-enter the institutional setting now. But we have the “glass” (the media space) in the background, perhaps as a source of information, or as a source of inspiration, or as justification or “backup” (we’re already speculating at this point). Naturally, within an institutional space the authority figures can’t be sufficiently well prepared in other creative languages, such as that of experimental electronic music. At that time I suspected they would have asked for advice, sought out the expertise of the most skilled people in these related fields. How the information will have been negotiated remains unknown to us as well.
During this process, our character with the unsolved Rubik head briefly reappears in the shot. The image trembles a little, suggestively. The process of recombining pawns, actors and elements of symbolic language continues rapidly. Hypotheses will have been recompiled and recalculated, depending on various interests, under various auspices, with correct or incorrect information, truncated or not.
- As I had already illustrated in quite enough scenes, episodes more or less distant in time and space, I did a “fast-forward” toward the recent past. Here I am now using wooden figurines, referring to my experience in Sighetu Marmației, in the furniture factory in which my parents were shareholders.
In short, we observe a circular movement around this symbolic character: the wooden figurine, symbolizing the entire hierarchical ladder of a corrupt system, corruption inherent to the post-communist period and not only. Once the viewer has gone through the video up to this point, it’s not hard to understand why the scene seems downright caricatural. There needed to be a point at which chaotic movements — in my view at the time — would gradually and definitively erode any possible power structure and, through contagion, confusion and lack of information, draw as many non-experts as possible into this implosion. These non-experts are symbolized by the orange ping-pong balls or the simple wooden cubes. At this point the narrative structure is interrupted by noise.
Well, this noise — a native effect from Sony Vegas — carries several symbols with it: informational noise, confusion, madness, psychosis (on one hand) and “TV static,” trying to show the viewer that the source of the whole “madness,” as well as of the entire narrative, is in fact the “media space.” Of course, the allusion has yet another, deeper layer: what matters isn’t just the image itself, displayed on TV screens, but also all the production details standing behind it: from directors to grips, from sound or image engineers to cables, “jacks,” and even micro-details known only to specialists.
The most attentive can even assess the “scale” of the visual grain of this visual and conceptual noise (with eyes slightly closed, intuitively, you’ll be able to grasp the mixture of “mental mess,” “corruption” and extremely aggressive intentions). In this image, a visual symbol for absolute confusion, I also introduced the sequence of digits from 1 to 8.
It is indeed also a form of allusion to a “wheel of fortune,” pushed by an invisible moderator to generate randomizations of the “scenario” illustrated up to this point. We could also think of that “countdown” that often appeared in the early era of film. But in my piece this countdown runs both from 1 to 8, and from 8 to 1, a sign that, almost certainly, this kind of installation, whose methods we’re illustrating, will not cease to function.
We can also play a bit with the number “8”: well, my dears, if we go into detail, we can see it as a sign of infinity turned vertical, as a small joke about glasses (which I already wore starting in 10th grade of high school, or not). Last but not least, this “wheel of fortune,” a symbol of the superficiality of gambling (the naive hope of winning something in life without putting in any effort), also shows us that behind these manipulation schemes stand studious people too, attentive to detail and to these useless, facile inversions, which attract the curiosity and minds of those already affected by the mirage and noise of the media. That is, ultimately, these minds full of amorphous informational noise, searching in vain for a way out of the System.
And last but not least, the numbers 1 and 8 also meant a reminder of the fact that, under all these auspices, our family, like other shareholders, had to close down a business valued, as I knew the Creditor Banks had stated, at around 18 million euros. Going back a little in thought, a sharp-eyed viewer will understand that this visual material also addresses them — those who know the mechanisms of financial engineering. It’s a rhetorical question: do they know the whole panoply of actors, pawns, hierarchies and power structures that found, sustain and promote, in the collective mental space, the great machinery of manipulation?
Anyway, I told myself, in case they didn’t know these things now, through indirect references and careful, individual study they could have started to learn and eventually come to know them. That, of course, if by chance someone had come across this video in time.
- And here we are in the final scenes: we’re dealing with an ongoing “combinatorics”: pawns, old and new actors constantly change the symbolic fabric created in earlier episodes: eyes, ears, noses appear and disappear, gathering information, keeping the process running.
A female figure remains a constant witness, overseeing the mechanics and sequence of events. She functions both as a model and as a potential victim, and probably as a source of inspiration too. It’s about, of course, the old practice of corrupt societies of putting the female model on a pedestal of absolute perfection and “playing” (and “playing her”) in this role through a network of manipulation of information, image, status, etc. Of course, let’s be honest, it’s about the objectification, with or without the consent, of this type of female model. But I’d dare to claim that, in most cases, it’s objectification with the consent, encouragement and even enthusiastic dedication of these very actresses.
And so my attempt to use neutral, classical, elegant symbols will probably have been diverted from its original purpose by the very networks of manipulators who were already operating within these schemes. “Everyone is a work of art,” you might say, right? The statement is debatable: I still hold the opinion that art represents human qualities at their highest level, and not baseness, filth, lies and fakery.
In the décor we also have the same omnipresent glass (we’ll never really escape ill-intentioned people in the media networks, I’d say), behind which we find a crumpled newspaper. For me this newspaper means an enormous number of things. The memory of newspapers useful only for propaganda, which I used to scribble over the faces of communist leaders before the Revolution (mustaches, nose rings, glasses, etc.). The newspaper also means, for me, the publications of the ’90s — in fact the aesthetic of the final scenes sends us more and more toward the depression and anguish I was in during that period.
The scene also contains the picture frame, which, in English, also translates as “frame.” In English “framed” means a setup, manipulation into falling into a con artist’s trap without realizing how or why. And especially, where things head once you’re “framed.” What’s more, for me the empty “picture frame” also points toward the minimal, symbolic stage design used in theater, especially during the austerity periods of those same ’90s.
Of course, in this whole context we can also interpret (or project onto, according to taste) the facial expression of the female figure now: restrained sarcasm, hypocritical pity toward the potential audience that, of course, is forced to witness this pitiful visual demonstration; then false sadness that the character still needs to be present in the décor, in the shot. Yes, of course, as the same victim, accuser, abuser as the other female entities present since the very first shots. But, because the character is a woman, because we’re feminists, because we respect our role-play within our power networks, we allow ourselves to objectify her — this time, obviously, with her knowledge and consent. Otherwise, she wouldn’t stay in the shot and wouldn’t objectify herself, right?
The last scene is again taken from a fragment found in an online, open-source library. It’s also a subliminal reference to the idea that the film can be watched from the end to the beginning too. That “slice here” was a sarcastic question addressed directly to the directors and principal actors of this long narrative. As a bitter amusement, I also used that “Soniboo” found who-knows-where.
Why, dear readers, you’ll ask yourselves? Well, honestly, the issue of “copyright,” of “licenses,” of their “validity” within various reference and value systems has been discussed for many years now.
I’m sure that even back then, as today, few people make the effort to acquire the right to use their working tools in the digital domain. As I’ve stated in other posts too, that wasn’t my case. From the moment I allowed myself, and wanted, to move from mere play to statements — in my own name, at least — I knew I could only do it this way.
Now, the fact that I was using Sony Vegas and that the name Soniboo could, if needed, or according to certain associated interests, be read a certain way — I sensed that too, then and there. The association almost leads you to think of a pirate brand copying one with history and experience. Honestly, there was also a small irony here: that’s just what the reality was then, and probably still is today. There are, in the world, serious producers and researchers, with solid, well-thought-out products, and an entire array of copycats, semi-professionals and “wannabes.”
Far be it from me to have sought out the exact source of this small video fragment, but, rest assured, my dears, that at the time it was free and declared to be “open source.”
And so, my dears, here we are on August 30, 2013, and I hand the video over to Radu, my brother-in-law, who uploaded it to the YouTube channel of my sister Paula Seling. I return to my original intention and I stand by it today too: the video is, on one hand, a cry for help for Paula, and, at the same time, an attempt to expose in advance the methods, networks, directors and actors who had been working at this kind of thing for many, many years.
Now that I look, after so many years, at the video’s description, I notice it has 17,000 views and a strange tag: #amywinehouse. Honestly, this intervention seems very dubious to me, seemingly pointless, illogical.
Or, could it be otherwise? We’ll continue in future entries with other videos from that period, as well as the way I thought about them — then and now.
Epilogue: you see, dear readers, I thought about many things back when I made this piece, almost spontaneously, in about 48 hours. With minimal resources available, with 800-1000 lei as a budget, without any help or any prior special education, I consider that an exceptional piece came out of it, one I still stand by today.
The fact that the aesthetic of the piece from that period is “low-tech” shows two things:
a) I was in a state of confusion, anguish, extreme anxiety and more, so that I couldn’t work — the way others do, those stable within the system — strategically, calculated, empirically; that would have been proof of insincerity, of responding through the same methods — that would have implied that between the two camps there had ever existed any dialogue at all, rather than a unilateral action against me, my family, those around me. I trained myself, throughout my life, according to the creed of humanist creatives, to be, in every piece, as honest and open as possible. It was the only guarantee that this “message in, on and through the glass” would ultimately be received as such.
b) These directed actions were already extremely “questionable” in terms of morality, methods and strategy, so that, in this way, beyond the narrative structure, the symbolism, the coloring or other technical procedures, the overall aesthetic in fact exposes even the mental disharmony or the dubious character of everyone involved, from one end to the other.
