Cheile mele / My keys ( Ep.1 )

I was telling you, dear readers, about a few short episodes from the year and a half I spent playing in my sister Paula’s band, “Enders” (those who finish, bring things to an end, “The Finishers”).

I would now like to wrap things up, as much as possible, with all the details that, more or less faithfully or accurately, have remained in the minds of the local musicians’ community and beyond.

There is an amusing moment that I wasn’t a witness to, but which, as the story goes, took place when Prof. Bertok appeared at the Students’ Club on his first day. My colleagues used to talk about the previous teacher, probably named Damse (?), as a stylish, elegant, charismatic educator.

Now, face to face with Mr. Bertok, the students were stunned. A playful, slightly scatterbrained personality, the teacher introduced himself, gave a few brief instructions, and then stopped, absent-mindedly scratching himself in the groin area, exclaiming:

“– Where the f**k did I put my keys?!”

We all laughed about that image for years. We were young, naïve kids; there was no way we could have known how things would evolve, or how all this information would eventually find its way into God knows what places.

A few years ago, I published an old memory, rummaging a little through my recollections while going through the family’s box of photographs. There it was: the Yamaha PSR workstation that Prof. Bertok had sold us during the very first days of the Enders band.

Now, looking back, I think more carefully about the haste with which the man informed us that we absolutely needed a “keyboard” and that he himself would be the one to supply it.

Prof. Bertok came to our house with the “keyboard” and started playing a quick demonstration for us, asking for the money – quite a lot of it – and leaving in a hurry. After he left, we young people sat down to play with our new toy, only to discover that more than a third of the keys no longer worked – they produced no sound at all. On top of that, the “keyboard” was almost broken, something we had accepted from the start, telling ourselves that we would simply be careful when handling it.

Of course, I asked my father to call the teacher the next day so that we could get our money back and return the workstation. It was no longer possible; the money had already been handed over to the original seller. Apparently, Bertok had merely been the clever, slippery, manipulative and, ultimately, unreliable middleman.

I remember wondering what kind of future we were going to have under the baton of such a man, someone lacking in character. From the very first days, while employed by a state institution, you deceive your own students and expect everyone to ignore the incident over the following years. Of course, that wasn’t the case. I, at least, always regarded him with doubt and reserve, while the other members of the band probably regarded him with a mixture of respect – for his professionalism on the one hand, and his mercantile spirit on the other.

Since every teenager is impressionable, and since, without realizing it, we learn from and absorb the methods of adults, more or less questioning their integrity or character, it seems that this slipperiness was successfully passed on to us. If we also add the institutional authority under whose umbrella such things were taking place, we get quite a cocktail.

Returning to my post from a few years ago, I already had Prof. Bertok’s daughter on my friends list, and she immediately responded, quite vehemently: “That’s not true, my father never sold you a faulty keyboard, etc.” Fortunately, I still have the photograph in the box of memories, and the other members of the band certainly remember this detail. It is fairly clear that Prof. Bertok never told his daughters about this “deal,” but the fact that, throughout the years the band existed, they apparently never noticed the detail at all is a little strange.

Many years later, I heard from someone – I have forgotten who – that the girls had moved to Switzerland after their father’s death and had fallen in with some questionable circles. I was somewhat skeptical of the claim, comparing the image I had of the professor with the theories put forward by these third parties. I could not believe that the daughters of a good musician, a good professional, could have fallen so far and somehow tarnished the image of such a legacy. My mental negotiation eventually settled on a “you never know” or “who knows what forces or manipulations may have acted upon the girls as well.”

A little anecdote from the world of Baia Mare musicians tells of Prof. Bertok being such a good trumpet player that he had actually been invited to Vienna, to the Philharmonic. To us, the youngsters, this was truly something grand. The explanation circulating among us for his refusal was that he could not take his family with him and that he therefore remained here, like an unappreciated gem, in a community whose tastes and virtuosity were, to put it mildly, rather questionable.

#4

Another anecdote tells us that the talented instrumentalist took up playing keyboards because, had he played trumpet at weddings or other events, he would not have been able to drink at all. With the keyboard in front of him, sitting on a chair, he would place his cup of pálinka on the plastic casing of the “keyboard” and could keep drinking steadily until the end of the gig. His passion for Maramureș pálinka was legendary, and I interpreted it as a form of self-abuse.

Why, dear readers, you may ask? Well, because, essentially, I never believed the man to be inherently harmful, but rather maladapted to the web of intrigues, obscure interests, and manipulations that runs through the local or national music world, the world of party musicians and, more specifically, the circles surrounding them: places where they performed, famous clients, officials, corrupt circles, and so on.

Cinema Minerul had been, even before the Revolution, the place where, every Saturday morning until noon, the city’s musicians would gather under the direction of one organizer or another – the person in charge of the event – who was paid for the weekend gig. My colleagues from Enders used to tell stories about countless “deals,” “petty thefts,” and “scams” orchestrated by one person or another within this motley community.

Certainly, not long after leaving Enders, I came to wish I had never entered those circles in the first place. In fact, my reason for approaching Prof. Bertok was that I needed to prepare for the entrance examination to the School of Architecture. Besides, my intense rock-climbing training had stiffened the muscles in my fingers enough that I no longer had sufficient dexterity for saxophone solos.

You see, in my seventeen-year-old mind, I opposed such a morally questionable environment with two other possible worlds: that of reason combined with art – architecture – and that of extreme sport – rock climbing – where I still believed I might find, if not balance and clarity of thought, at least an environment that was less morally corrupt. But, as one can see today, looking back carefully, the calculations I made back then did not exactly produce any results.

Through an extended process of contagion (both in time and space), multiple branches from environments of various types and degrees of corruption spread into all these other environments. If the phenomenon seemed unreal to me at the time – unbelievable, impossible to calculate in terms of its consequences and its reach – today, looking back, I keep making more and more connections, and many apparently unrelated events are beginning to make sense.

Somewhere between cheap or crude humor, quotations from the past, petty or mafia-like interests, and these seemingly banal little stories that I had forgotten in the chest of my melancholy and frustrations, they have somehow become “memes” in the collective consciousness of certain communities. Other communities, more educated and more demanding, still look upon them today either with condescension, with contempt, or, at most, with sarcastic amusement.
