Atac punctual / Attack on spot

Mi s-a părut o măsură extremă.

English version

It is 2009, the beginning. There is still snow outside. I had only been on the new social networking platform, Facebook, for a few weeks. At first I was hesitant. I honestly wasn’t particularly eager to get “in line with everyone else.”

Before that, I used to put my music up on Myspace, chat occasionally on Yahoo Messenger, a little on Hi5, and arrange the occasional awkward meeting through some online dating site. A lousy undertaking. Even today, I am stunned by how many disappointments I had right from those first dates.

During the first few days I was rather clumsy. I still didn’t quite understand the interface, but gradually I began to assess the way the network spread its influence from one person to another. I was extremely excited to reconnect with former classmates — from school, from university. I was gaining a new kind of energy. After several years of isolation, here we were: I no longer had to get into a car and drive thousands of kilometers to see someone. We were all apparently together. At least in our minds.

It never even crossed my mind that if your profile was public, your personal information and, especially, your circle of friends could be visible from the outside. I ignored the occasional person who warned me to set my account to private. There were others who didn’t even want you in their network if your account wasn’t closed to outsiders. It seemed like an extreme measure to me. I thought there had to be something shady going on, or, even worse, some kind of closed network, involved in questionable things or serving interests that were not transparent. Since I had always been open and communicative, I left all the settings on “default.”

I also went through the frequent graphical interface changes of Facebook’s early years with a certain sense of wonder. I was constantly trying to anticipate what the platform’s functionality really was, relating it to the template as well, making increasingly sophisticated calculations in my head and predictions extending farther and farther into time and space.

I certainly didn’t particularly like the way the interface looked or the way it was organized. It seemed a little too rigorous; my tastes lean more toward graphics that are organic, friendlier. But behind this apparent simplicity, I knew from the very beginning that there was a beautiful little toy hiding underneath.

I could now continue my experiments based on my old passion for sociology. At last, I could test, for free, how people relate to one another, how they communicate, how they exchange or manipulate information. To be honest, at the beginning I could not imagine just how complex this experiment was going to become.

But, just to make this clear to everyone, my experiment was never based on deception or on deliberately introducing distorted information into the network. I always posted about myself: about my thoughts, about the state I was in that particular day. Then there was art: poetry, photography, graphics, music, and so on.

Naturally, these alternative languages can be — and probably were — interpreted as tools of manipulation. Because, after all, within metaphor and allegory we can throw in almost any assumption. We can “see” things simply because we assume that we know and that we are capable of knowing, or we can use other people’s content as a way of lying and manipulating.

From a statistical and social point of view, Romanian society, like other vulnerable societies or networks affected by corruption around the world, is indeed susceptible to such phenomena. On the one hand, differences in education, media literacy, and access to information can make some people easier to influence. On the other hand, groups with greater experience and resources may have been able, from the outside, to use the same mechanisms in the opposite direction.

How these two worlds intersected is, however, something that remains to be seen, investigated, and understood.

The phenomenon seems to continue even today.

But at the beginning, in 2009, my questions were:

  1. Why was each individual surrounded by people they already knew, and why and how did each person ultimately function as an island in the middle of a group arranged radially within their individual mental space? How did each island interact with the others around it, and what were the effects of these interactions?
  2. Why was it so difficult to meet people from other countries? Facebook offered you options for adding friends only from your own community or from the communities surrounding yours. Why did it seem that the network was inclined to consolidate already existing communities rather than broaden and extend them outward, something that I felt would have been more beneficial? Capturing new influences, encountering new personalities, receiving organic, complex feedback seemed more important to me than “closing” local groups within shared mentalities and, ultimately, solidifying bridges, channels of connection, and regressive ways of thinking.
  3. How dangerous was it to accept into your list, at the second or third degree of separation, people who had mutual connections with former abusers, aggressors, individuals interested in negative things, and so on? Wouldn’t these people, through their very character and that of their supporting communities, contaminate even networks of naïve or well-intentioned people through manipulation, abuse, falsification, and lies? And as they grew older and started families, wouldn’t they try to cover up or diversify the abuses of the past, supported by increasingly broad and increasingly well-informed networks of connections?
  4. What could I expose on Facebook, consciously aware that these accounts were genuine sources of personal data — not necessarily sensitive data, but… interpretable, analyzable, and so on? At the next thought, I meditated on this a little more deeply. With these gray-zone characters whom, whether you liked it or not, you were sometimes forced, at least out of politeness, to accept into your network, through contagion and private conversations, your entire network of benevolent supporters could gradually become compromised. How was I supposed to formulate, state, compose, or expose this kind of content which, in the end, remains personal, whether you share a piece of music you liked or simply post a selfie?

Well, after only a few weeks of thinking about it, I realized that, given my atypical status as a “celebrity’s relative,” the situation was extremely serious. If I closed my account and remained completely disconnected, countless narratives would be constructed in my absence, especially since Paula was also forced to create a public-figure page of her own. I would probably have been moving blindly through the network of unconnected people — something that was becoming increasingly difficult as Facebook was adopted on a massive scale — and eventually I would have fallen victim, as usually happens, to various forms of information manipulation whose source, methods, or actors I would have had not the slightest clue about.

If I stayed on the network, then I had to be cautious. Since my experience up to that point had shown me that I attracted far more dislike than sympathy (almost none, if we are being honest), I would either have to lie in wait, following every account, every opinion, every photograph, inevitably slipping into paranoia very quickly, or ignore every feed and start “exposing.” Unfortunately, not only do I have neither the time nor the inclination to follow other people’s accounts or sensitive information, but I am also not predisposed — by education, training, or interests — to do such a thing. If I was ever interested in anything posted by others, it was art as the highest form of human expression. Of course, not all artists believe in these principles or visions, so after a while the lives and circumstances of creative people on the network gave me something to think about.

I have mentioned this before: after only 2–3 months I started drawing, and then evolved, year after year, toward more and more types of visual art, music, video production, and finally AI, constantly questioning the way the network reacted and provided feedback. Perhaps I will detail each aspect of this long evolution in a dedicated post.

And now came the first “intervention” in my personal life, at a point when the first calculations had apparently been made or the first strategies had apparently been devised, probably from the outside, almost exactly as I had already anticipated. The new options for visibility, or for creating a “(relatively) public image,” were, after all, undeniable and unstoppable. The only thing I had not expected was for the reaction to come so quickly.

So, a strange event happened during this early period.

Lidia T., a former university classmate of mine from Bucharest, whom I had liked, almost out of the corner of my eye, throughout our entire period of study, asked me if she could come and visit me at home for a week or two.

She was a smart, hard-working, fairly talented girl. Pretty, somewhat atypical, but very petite (around 155 cm) and a glasses-wearer. That was one of the reasons why I never tried to get close to her.

On the other hand, I had seen her for a while at university in a relationship with another classmate, who was taller than me. Hmm, I thought to myself, accepting her proposal, I can foresee something nice between us. Surely a girl doesn’t come all the way from 600 kilometers away to stay at your place without at least some slightly romantic intention.

And she came. At first, I was more than happy to sponsor the entire expedition, with a little surprise at the end. Sometimes it is advisable to make at least some gesture toward covering a minimal expense, such as part of the journey, or something along those lines. I am not particularly accustomed to allowing myself to be objectified in any way – actually, in no way at all – especially in a transaction of this kind. It not only saddens me, but also makes me feel that I myself have no character and then no identity whenever someone attempts to draw me into such an exchange.

After a few days, noticing the direction in which things were evolving, I became increasingly absent, increasingly uninvolved. Now that I was hosting my former classmate, I thought we might as well take some trips: we went up on our snowboards to near Creasta Cocoșului, together with a good friend, U. (fortunately, U. became frightened by the possibility of an avalanche and we went no farther; we cautiously made our way back through the snow, already heavy and wet – it was the beginning of spring).

On another day, we took a two-day trip to Cluj-Napoca, staying with my old friend Boris. I was absolutely mortified when, while we were walking hand in hand down a street in the city center, two strangers mockingly shouted at me: “What, are you taking your little girl to kindergarten?” We both kept silent, lol. There is simply nothing you can say to something like that.

And so the inevitable had happened, and, to be honest, I had expected something like this from the beginning, at least in the form of looks and whispered remarks. Yes, dear readers, sometimes you have to realize that scale matters. Harmony and balance within a relationship (aesthetic, physical, mental) are a valuable asset when confronting social friction, especially in countries with backward mentalities, prejudice, and a lack of education, such as the one we live in.

I have to admit that, after only one day, a form of sexual tension that may have been floating in the air for quite some time spontaneously turned into a form of physical contact. It was beautiful in a way, but there was an absolutely critical moment there for the rest of my life.

We were lying in bed, and T. told me about a massive abuse she had suffered at the hands of a group of Roma people who had abducted her from a bus stop and held her captive for two days. As far as I remember, this happened sometime in the mid- or late 1990s, in a marginal area of the capital.

The effect on my mind was immediate and devastating. I found myself face to face with a victim of a past abuse. But unfortunately, our interaction had already taken place. Now I was sitting on the edge of the bed, trying to figure out whether Lidia had unexpectedly entered my personal space simply as a well-intentioned person, or whether I was facing a genuine “hack.”

To be honest, at that moment I did not interpret the interaction as a hack.

I began imagining the scenes of torture – the girl showed me scars left on her neck by cigarettes extinguished by her aggressors. I even tried to enter the minds of these people. What did they have to prove? Why had they chosen this particular victim, and why these precise methods of acting? What had been going through the girl’s mind during those two days, and how had they affected her afterward, throughout the rest of her life? Could it have been an assault with a symbolic, demonstrative subtext? And if so, who was meant to receive the message of this assault?

You are forced to constantly compile these pieces of data which, to be honest, do not really belong to the normal order of things. And then, in that very same moment, you are overcome by anger, by the inability to act, but also by the inability to transport yourself back into the past, to the very moment when the events occurred. And if you had been there, what would you have done, and when? Would you have run after the car in which the girl had been abducted? Would you have immediately called 112 to alert the police, perhaps? Would you nevertheless have gotten into a fight with the aggressors? Would you have risked your life for someone who, ten years later, is sitting calmly in your home, telling you all these things?

That was when I realized that there might also be another subtext to the event: perhaps it could be a test, an interrogation, but at the same time also a silent reproach. Given that, during the visit, the girl was communicating with other people on the phone, apparently reporting on the state of things – hers, and probably mine, ours as well – the whole situation no longer seemed to me to have anything to do with normality.

So there I was, facing a victim possibly transformed by an external group of interests into a virus, an informant, a “hack” in my personal life, or at least that was my vague intuition. After such events – which I was already almost beginning not to believe anymore – could you trust in the mental balance of this victim? My answer was: either she had been traumatized beyond the understanding of any human being, or she had partially recovered; in either case, she was not only allowing herself to be used for this purpose, but was also acting according to external, group interests.

After so many clues accumulated within a few days, I began looking at this person with suspicion, constantly wondering who was pulling the strings behind her, why she accepted this, and what the long-term consequences for me would be. Having no more data, I stopped the mental investigation there. In fact, you are forced to “close your eyes” to the event, perhaps even to forget it at some point, for lack of data and context. Or you may wake up to reality much later, when the ramifications of these manipulations have multiplied or spread beyond your ability to understand them.

Returning to this possible “hack,” I have nothing to reproach myself for, actually: if I had been there at the moment of the abduction, I would certainly have done something. If I had found out about it soon afterward – during university – I might have looked into it, and our later interaction certainly would never have taken place.

But now you find yourself blaming yourself for discrimination. I actually wondered how the victim of such an abuse could live with it for the rest of her life. Every man she meets, if he has even a minimum of decency and education, asks himself the same questions and faces the same dilemmas. The same distance stands between the two of them, a distance that effectively transforms them into a perpetual binary pair of eternal victim and possible or potential abuser.

I actually concluded that, in order to continue enjoying physical interactions, the girl could never tell someone about the abuse from the very beginning. But then, unable to hide it anyway – and why would she hide it, after all? – or wanting to remain honest with her partner, she was forced to tell him, paradoxically becoming an abuser herself in turn. In this way, year after year, she draws more and more victim-men into the binary, functioning like a kind of mechanism actually created by the original abusers.

Now, as a final thought, no law-enforcement agency can control every member of society at every moment, so events like these cannot be predicted. In general, when people find themselves in situations that fall outside the sphere of normality, they freeze or look for someone to blame. The more infantile they are, the less familiar they are with the harsh realities of the World, the quicker and easier it becomes to externalize the guilt induced by having been a witness, even an indirect one, to such abuses. “I don’t care, I don’t want to know, I don’t want to hear, it’s none of my business” is something we will hear quite often.

Others may fall into the opposite extreme: I want to understand everything, I want to find the causalities, the details, to find the reasoning behind it, the symbolism, the networks, the mechanisms of influence and propagation of this genuine virus.

You see, dear readers, these kinds of abuses are not merely isolated events in time and space; they generate waves of unforeseen consequences afterward.

The only thing is that… if some of us want to remain neutral, others want to investigate, others want to understand, there are also those who want to — and know how to — exploit these “effects” of abuse across… time and space. And so I ask you: what can we believe, and what can we do in the face of people like this, and how do we stop them? What do we do when a victim can so easily be transformed, manipulated, and then objectified in games of manipulation that exceed the scale and spectrum of normality?

Another thought from that period was that the alternative to all these chains of events might have been for the victim to enter, as quickly as possible, a process of possible healing through psychotherapy, within a controlled, safe environment. Whether she or the therapist has the willingness to explain the complexity of the World, of Society, of human characters of every kind, and whether this process ultimately serves any purpose, is another matter for discussion. In any case, in my opinion, this option should be attempted, as it is probably the only one that does not generate too many aberrant side effects.

Of course, another thought from that same moment was… not everyone has such financial resources, and not everyone, after such events, possesses the calm and mental clarity, the patience and the hope that may seem naïve to many, necessary to embark upon such a path.

Yes, dear readers, all these thoughts went through my mind within a few seconds, while I was sitting there with Lidia T., reflecting on all this on the edge of the sofa. And yes, I ultimately classified the entire interaction as a “hack” and as an abusive intervention in my intimate and personal life, as the reasoning above indicates.

Epilogue: a few months later, I am at Terasa Actorilor in Bucharest, having a beer with Lidia T. At one point she exclaims, with a hint of humor in her voice: “If you buy me a pizza, I’ll come to your place.”

Well, well, another bizarre transaction proposal, I tell myself, taking the compromise I had apparently been making, without even realizing it, one step further. Certainly, I thought, a well-intentioned, educated, cultured, capable person would have chosen a different path in life, expressed themselves differently, acted differently.

A few years later, I notice, again on Facebook, that Lidia T. has left the country and practices yoga. At the time, I told myself that this was another, alternative spiritual path, a way of continuing an evolution toward healing and understanding the World in all its complexity. And yet, the memory of the entire chain of events left me with a faint trace of doubt.
