Cum ne vânzoleam unii printre alții, într-o continuă evaluare a forțelor celorlalți, a mișcărilor, a tonusului, a energiei fizice.
Doar suntem oameni, nu-i așa?
Mi-a plăcut, spre exemplu, piesa „Little Scare” a vocalistului Benjamin Diamond.
English version
I met Valeriu R., the director of Radio 21 Bucharest, shortly after he became involved, in that particular sense, with Paula, my sister. It was the end of the ’90s, perhaps late ’98 or late ’97.
Before him, Paulica had got together with a rather odd guy. He was shorter than her, had no university education, an olive complexion, his hair perpetually tied back in a ponytail, and a slightly lecherous attitude. He was trying to work as a DJ, and that was how we became acquainted, just a little, exchanging impressions about electronic club music.
I clearly remember listening through headphones, sitting next to him, to “Music Sounds Better With You” by the French group Stardust, marveling at the production and trying, through all the details of composition and sound, to understand what the three producers were actually trying to say. The singer’s voice, Benjamin Diamond’s, was truly distinctive.
Well, let me tell you what I was thinking, as far as I can remember now: it was a relatively linear composition, not particularly complex in terms of narrative – it simply didn’t evolve in order to tell a story; it was more a matter of atmosphere, of mood. I was impressed by the small, unusual rhythmic breaks, where the kick drum didn’t necessarily come in when you might expect it to.
The disco guitar sample and the violins, probably taken from a vinyl record of ’70s music of that kind, were repetitive, but beautifully treated in a modern fashion. I kept wondering what sort of effects they had “wrapped” around them to make them sound so beautiful and expressive, and I actually sat down at my Korg Trinity to try to identify them.
It could have been a flanger, a phaser, perhaps a little chorus; I even thought about a rotary effect. Or perhaps several of them combined. You simply can’t know for sure, because this kind of effect sounds different depending on the equipment, the manufacturer, and the particular hardware or software generating it.
But, my dear friends, the video itself was extremely interesting. The boy, who appeared to be an ordinary middle-class American, passionate about model aircraft and extremely skilled and “astucieux” – resourceful, dexterous – immediately reminded me of an old desire I had back in the ’80s, under Communism: to join the model-aeronautics group at the local Youth Club.
Well, well, I didn’t have time for things like that; I absolutely had to study an instrument, theory, and so on.
I was rather pleased to see that such freedoms existed in the West – parents sitting calmly at the table, speaking with warmth and indulgence, perhaps discussing their child’s future, perhaps the problems of the day. If I listened carefully to the actors’ voices, I could perhaps detect a small undertone of cleverly concealed concern, but that is merely my personal interpretation.
Of course, it isn’t difficult to see that the child actor – who performs exceptionally well, like any talented child in these worlds – seems to be playing a boy who is slightly absent-minded. But let’s not call him absent-minded, just as any ordinary parent would not necessarily consider their child strange simply because he isn’t particularly interested in going out into the streets with other children his age.
Let us say instead that, in the West, or at least in the image conveyed by that particular video, young people’s passions are nurtured, encouraged and explored with genuine interest by the wider community of parents and children. They understand very well that a student who fails to follow his instincts throughout his life cannot easily become a successful adult, but may instead grow into an unfulfilled person, with all the consequences that such unfulfillment brings.
I became sad afterward, remembering the situation in Romania during the ’80s and ’90s. The kind of child portrayed in the video, the Western child, was not represented among us in quite that way. Toys like these, interests like these, even a plate full of good food that the boy barely notices because he considers it perfectly normal – these things simply did not exist in Romania in the ’80s, and only began to appear, extremely timidly, during the ’90s.
We were the “Decree Kids”, as that ugly term puts it. Children who played with whatever they could find in the dust of the streets, among unfinished construction sites and vacant lots. Some of us occasionally got a slap on the backside; others were beaten with a belt.
Yes, my dear friends, those were difficult times. People lived amid shortages, paranoia and social and psychological dissonance, so perhaps this widespread phenomenon is understandable. Many times, throughout my adult life, I have met people my age who still carry resentment toward parents who sometimes behaved abusively.
I always advised them to do more research into history, psychology and trauma psychology, and to try to understand their generation, their parents and their history, so that they might eventually forgive those who came before them, because… “that was simply how things were back then.”
By going through this process, we not only make peace with the past, but also with ourselves, gaining new wings and new energy to move forward with our lives in a proactive and creative way and, ultimately, to heal, through calm, wisdom and reason, any conflicts we may have with those around us.
Let’s take another look at the video.
I was immensely amused by the series of caricatured musicians appearing on the music television chart that the child watched from time to time, almost absent-mindedly. Naturally, you might think that such visual content is perhaps too difficult for a child to fully understand.
Perhaps, at this stage of development, we have not yet learned to recognize sarcasm, crude irony, or, ultimately, sheer vulgarity. The child absorbs these games of role-playing as a norm and an example – especially when they come from television screens, are broadcast around the world and are discussed by other people as well.
If we look closely at the arrows indicating artists moving up or down the charts, we might rationalize that the selection of these modern heroes is made by the general public. At least, that is how I understood it at the time.
But let’s take the analysis a little further.
The band Stardust – those three silver-haired, bald-headed men – seem to be climbing the charts. I found this amusing, almost like a cute little joke: well, if we know, and show you, the public, that we are climbing the charts, doesn’t that mean we understand the media system, its values, and know how to penetrate it with confidence and skill, relying on talent and experience?
And by displaying wit and irony, we also make the intelligent and cultured members of our audience part of the joke.
There it was, I told myself: a visual construction built on multiple layers of humor, from the most accessible to the more complex, from attention to visual detail all the way to structuralism and self-referential techniques.
Now, I don’t believe that the caricatured musicians appearing on the child’s television screen failed to receive this “meme” at the time. We have, for example, an approximate appropriation of many visual clichés from productions of the ’80s, even the ’70s.
The color grading itself, the props, the family home – everything seems to evoke a generic atmosphere of 1970s America, or at least the version of it promoted through cinema.
All right, all right, but… I immediately thought: we are dealing with three Frenchmen, not Americans. What we are looking at is actually a false virtual reality – the Frenchmen did not grow up on the prairies; perhaps they spend their time strolling around Paris, chatting over an espresso on the Champs-Élysées, or working in a professional studio.
On the other hand, a band of such quality has an exceptional visual and musical culture and would certainly not only perform all over the world, but also sell millions of copies of the single.
And that, my dear friends, is almost exactly what happened, seemingly overnight. The track became one of the cult references of the ’90s and 2000s, found its way into the mixes of countless DJs and was danced to in countless places around the world. And rightly so, wouldn’t you say?
Until the arrival of YouTube, around 2005–2006, I kept looking for a CD without success. In the end, once the track became available online, I was delighted to be able to revisit the memory of those beautiful years.
Let us, in one final paragraph, take a look at the symbolism of the glider that the three musicians, perched upon a cloud, return to the child. They seem to watch over the boy from above and, whenever the result of his work, perseverance, talent and painstaking attention is in danger of being lost among the clouds, the artists know how to find it, understand it and return it to him.
To be honest, at that moment I also amused myself with another thought: well, for the 1999 version of myself, those clouds also represented the “upper levels of society”, with the small irony that… up there, the world is full of steam, vapors, and so on.
Lol, I told myself, surely this is how things worked in Romania, at least as far as I understood them, but the reasoning also led me to think that, in the West, after everything the video had demonstrated up to that point, these “heights of society” might be somewhat more ethereal.
Well, well, then perhaps these three musicians are, in fact, a kind of actors serving this particular type of establishment, compelled to appear in the media spaces in order to return the “toys” lost by youngsters who may be insufficiently aware of the complexity of the context in which they live.
Lol, well then, I told myself, we return to the typology and the performance of the child actor, who does indeed confirm these mechanisms through which Western societies function. Experienced adults know how to understand the passions of the young and, sometimes, in order to allow them to carry their dreams forward and build their lives step by step, organically, they know how to play not only the role of protectors, but also that of educators.
But since education is not achieved through sterile instruction, punitive methods or even aggression, one can create such “mental toys” as this work – the song and the video. Those who are most interested, most capable, intelligent and cultured, with a predisposition toward abstraction and mental fitness, can follow this complex conceptual path anew with every viewing.
Now, how this work may have been interpreted by each culture, each country and each social group is difficult to know. Surely the “meme” must have been discussed in groups, over a glass of cognac and a cigar.
Let me tell you another little secret: it made me wonder how it might have been interpreted in Romania as well. Since the three musicians are shaved bald and covered entirely in silver, the collective imagination of young Romanian viewers might perhaps have perceived their symbolism as that of “spâni” – the Spân being the bald-headed villain of a famous Romanian fairy tale.
There is an old Romanian story called “Harap-Alb”, in which the Spân appears as the negative character.
The Encounter:
The young prince sets out toward Green Emperor and gets lost in the forest. The Spân appears several times in different guises and eventually offers himself as a guide.
The Trap:
The Spân tricks the young man into climbing down into a deep well, supposedly to cool himself. Once he is down there, he locks him in and threatens to kill him unless he submits.
The Pact:
The naïve prince agrees to become the Spân’s servant and receives the name Harap-Alb, swearing loyalty to him until death.
The Trials:
The Spân subjects Harap-Alb to difficult tasks – bringing salads from the Bear’s Garden and the hide of a deer with a petrified head. With the help of Saint Sunday and several magical beings – Gerilă, Setilă, Flămânzilă, Ochilă and Păsări-Lăți-Lungilă – Harap-Alb succeeds.
The Ending:
At the court of the Red Emperor and later on the journey home, the Red Emperor’s daughter exposes the betrayal. The Spân cuts Harap-Alb’s head off, but the girl brings him back to life, and Harap-Alb’s horse kills the Spân once and for all.
Now, whether the French musicians themselves had actually studied this old Romanian fairy tale would be difficult to know, but perhaps some more or less cultivated or enlightened minds here in Romania might have taken such a connection into consideration.
Of course, not everyone would have become “smoked out” or gone around with their “heads in the clouds” at the thought that artists of such caliber might be making references to our ancient cultural heritage. Perhaps some of them would have set about decoding the work in greater detail, sitting there with a glass of whisky in front of them and a cigar in their hand.
What the great minds of the world might have discussed among themselves, we obviously have no way of knowing. With so many visual, cultural and musical references contained in the work, surely many people must have been drawn into this “mental game”. And, given the success of the song, the same thing probably happened among club-goers all over the world.
Well, well, I told myself, watching the video for a second time on music television and then listening to the song again through my headphones. If someone were to find the story of Harap-Alb among all these multiple references, then someone ought to have been locked in the well by those three bald men and subjected to a whole series of difficult tasks.
To be honest, the image of the “lid” over the well came to me with a certain sense of unease. How could the positive hero survive in the darkness of that tube descending deep into the bowels of the Earth? How could he make a pact with the diabolical villain, live in his service, humiliated, and work for him for so long? Didn’t this amount to a compromise of his morality, his positive image, his role as a hero?
Well… we might also think of it as an admonition, a parable cleverly devised by an old peasant mentality. Perhaps, while serving the evil man, you can pay attention to his methods, learn his techniques of manipulation and his mannerisms, understand what makes him unusual and, why not, emerge from the experience more experienced, more mature and more skillful.
I was beginning to understand the moral of the story as well: there is no absolutely positive hero because, without life experience and without passing through hardship, without confronting “the bad man”, without understanding “the world in all its complexity” (“The world as it is”, as a Romanian urban meme puts it), he remains merely… an image without substance.
Our life experiences, the narrative of our lives, the way we pass through them shape our character and personality and provide us with continuity across time and space. Clearly, in this linear journey from birth to death, we choose to move either toward the typology of the Spân or toward that of the hero. But, as the fairy tale itself suggests, we do not always have absolute freedom, nor do we always have choices available to us.
Now, toward the end, let us return once again to the typology of the Western child in the video. Although he may never have heard of our traditional fairy tale, he surely grew up surrounded by a vast supply of narratives and ancient stories of his own. These not only reside in the collective mind, permeating speech, language structures and the collective imagination, but also give birth to new ideas, logical structures, forms of reasoning, and so on.
And, isn’t it so, it is upon these fundamental elements that new technologies, new objects, new images and new ideas are built – a cycle that repeats itself indefinitely, gradually carrying human society toward the future through the remembrance of the past, the reuse of values and their transmission onward, across time and space.
To be honest, at the time I didn’t think any further about the Romanian word “capac”. Now, with the benefit of hindsight, I understand that, after a little mental fitness, some might also associate it with the basketball technique of blocking the ball from above when an attacker rises into the air to shoot it toward the basket.
That, of course, requires a greater vertical leap than the attacker’s, agility, rapid movement, instinct and quick reflexes.
Well, dear readers, there I sit with a cigarette in my hand, by the window, contemplating the asphalt in the courtyard of the apartment block, where nobody’s pigeons happily peck at the grains of cornmeal I scatter every day.
And what do I remember, I wonder? Good Lord, I mutter under my breath: how can the simple recollection of a few details, of emotions from 30 years ago, so gently lead you toward other beautiful memories from your high-school years?
With no connection whatsoever to Stardust’s work, I follow the spider’s thread of memory, with melancholy, slightly tired eyes, after a night of slightly interrupted sleep.
Oh, dear readers, you should have seen us playing basketball in the courtyard of Șincai High School, year after year… how sometimes we delivered, but also received, “capace” from our classmates or other students… How we jostled and tangled with one another, in a continuous assessment of everyone else’s strength, movements, physical tone and energy.
Yes, dear readers, sporting competition sometimes hides this aspect as well: young people occasionally size up potential rivals they may have to deal with later in life, while others try to make themselves visible to the girls watching from the sidelines. And yes, there are people of questionable character who foul, scratch, hit and shove simply to prove what, in the end?
Well… nothing.
A basketball game in a schoolyard can never really degenerate into a dirty game, because once you sink to that level, it is no longer about sport or play, but about an actual brawl. And then the rules no longer apply: anyone can foul, attack, pull hair, shake someone around, or throw kicks at sensitive parts of the body.
But, my dear readers, in the end we resign ourselves to the thought that even a chaotic group brawl is still movement, still fitness, and our hearts are still pounding like mad. Perhaps not quite as rhythmically, not quite as steadily, not quite as variedly, but simply more chaotically.
Well, yes, there is even a short-term advantage to this: we get intense sensations, adrenaline, and a little escape from the sterile normality of all those regulations, standards and norms. We are only human, after all, aren’t we?
Epilogue: To be honest, back in the late ’90s, I never really wondered what would become of Stardust later on. I was surprised to discover that it was their only successful single, which surprised me in itself. Talents like these simply had to continue their careers, and later on I followed their solo projects through the newly emerging media platforms. I particularly liked the vocalist Benjamin Diamond’s track “Little Scare.”
As for the talented child actor in the video, I hope he went on to carve out a path for himself, following his passions and his vocation, just as the work itself so beautifully suggests is possible. Now, 30 years later, perhaps that is possible in Romanian society as well.
