Română
Dragii mei,
Plavka – „Right in the Night” și, undeva acolo, era o asemănare ciudată cu frumoasa Raluca T.
Este vorba de „Stella 1999–1992 (How Stella Got Her Groove)”.
Nu-i așa?
English version
My dear friends,
Let’s bring out a few more beautiful memories from our high-school years. I remember sitting on the outer fence of the basketball court at Șincai, watching the last few classmates who stayed after lessons playing in teams. I was waiting for Betty; we were supposed to chat for a little while before heading home.
I had always liked Betty because she was agile, smart, and perpetually dressed in leggings. The shape of her legs was absolutely perfect: athletic without being overly muscular. The only thing was that she wore glasses, something I had never particularly liked. Throughout the entire period I spent at Șincai, I kept contemplating the idea of approaching her, but there was a strange barrier between us.
On my side, there was certainly a physical attraction, held back by that peculiar detail – the glasses. On Betty’s side, there was always a form of intermittent flirting, a minimal tension that she maintained and renewed year after year – and which, at the time, I took to be somehow natural.
Certainly, like any smart teenage girl, Betty needed to feel integrated. Now, in our class, among all those fine specimens of the middle-ranking establishment (children of professors, doctors, or other high-ranking figures of the Communist establishment), Betty didn’t exactly stand out. Not academically – she was somewhere in the middle – and not necessarily in terms of physical beauty either.
Quite simply, the girl preferred to move either among the popular boys or among students from other classes, becoming, in her own way, a peculiar figure, known to everyone.
I soon found out that Betty intended to become a journalist; she was already preparing herself for it. As far as I remember, she even created, for a while, a magazine for students at the school who shared similar interests. I found the experience interesting, for as long as it lasted, thinking of it as a form of asserting independence in thought and action within a relatively rigid educational system, without it necessarily being an overt act of rebellion.
She seemed beautifully harmonized with and integrated into the context, without visibly questioning the existing state of affairs. I never found out why the project was shut down relatively quickly, but neither did I bother to ask, to be honest. As the saying goes, smart girls always know what they’re doing.
My little appearance as a cartoonist in the magazine founded by Betty and her classmates came about with a bit of enthusiasm, but also with a touch of bewilderment. Betty asked me for a series of cartoons which she intended to publish in, presumably, a few hundred copies and distribute around the school.
The truth is that I hadn’t drawn for years, being preoccupied with the usual concerns of adolescence: looking after girls, and the ambition to become a physicist at a research institute (perhaps somewhere in Romania or, why not, abroad – maybe even at what is today known as CERN).
Oh, dear readers, what grand ambitions a young man can have when he sees his future spread out before him, like a blank sheet of paper, ready to be filled with extraordinary deeds.
But, my dear friends, some people merely dream without actually putting in the work. As far as I was concerned, that wasn’t the case. The two gold-lettered inscriptions in the oversized ledger containing the names of the school’s heroes, displayed in the hallway, bear witness to that.
To be honest, I wouldn’t have engraved those names in gold letters, nor would I have fashioned the ledger out of wood. But, at the time, the tastes of the local establishment were somewhat less connected to global trends, and people here needed to be impressed by little flashes of brilliance or glimmers. But that was merely my opinion; perhaps “that was the best they could do” back then.
I hope, and I believe, that I will eventually manage to create a film that brings those moments back to life: the caricature of our mathematics teacher, Mr. M., in which he plants a flag bearing the words “Republic of Math” into an ordinary student. Mrs. P. M., our Romanian-language teacher, whose body is shaped like a pencil, while inside the speech bubble containing her words we find a cut-out from a compendium of literary commentaries. There was also the caricature of the priest who had substituted for our French teacher, M., and so on.
Let’s leave a little mystery for later, while I give some thought to the narrative thread of this possible video project.
Let’s return to that early autumn afternoon, with its rusty leaves drifting lazily down from the trees lining the fence of Șincai High School. I was still waiting for Betty when, right in front of me, a beauty beyond imagination came strolling along. Long, straight, light-brown hair, a supple body, feminine gestures, slightly absent-minded.
Well, well, I think to myself, here I am, the nerd in my shabby Sergio T. tracksuit, looking at the girl – popular, stunningly beautiful, and in perfect physical shape. “You don’t stand a chance, Paul. Forget about these thoughts,” I told myself.
Unfortunately, for quite some time, until my attention shifted toward other potential partners, I couldn’t stop sighing into my pillow late at night, imagining myself holding hands in the park with the girl whose name, I was soon to discover, was Raluca T.
Not long afterward, I had a little laugh at my own expense. I was hopelessly in love, I told myself. But why? Well, I kept watching the music video of a German Eurodance act – Jam & Spoon feat. Plavka – “Right in the Night,” and somewhere in there I noticed a strange resemblance to the beautiful Raluca T.
I quickly assembled the visual symbolism, as I usually did, while listening to the music at the same time. Innovative yet simple, it was a genre I came to love for its expressiveness achieved through minimal means. I remained fond of Eurodance until the end of high school, when I discovered trance.
Of course, dear readers, it was merely the effect of projection. When you are in love, you see the face of the girl you like everywhere, I concluded, amused. I decided that from then on I would pay attention to the phenomenon, study it, but also guard myself against endlessly searching music channels for clues or details that existed only within my own personal sphere.
My dear friends, the phenomenon of projection is terribly difficult to understand and rationalize – but not impossible.
As a small detail worth mentioning, it wouldn’t be entirely unbelievable if other young people at the school, equally fond of new music, had fallen into this subtle trap of approximate resemblances. It is, after all, perfectly normal; we have to acknowledge that. During adolescence we are far too impressionable. Our identity, character and sense of self have not yet fully taken shape, especially in the case of those who are less confident in themselves. Those with a less developed musical or visual education than ours, those of us who had emerged from the informational darkness of Communism’s isolation, could fall even more easily prey to doubt, unable to properly test their own intuition.
Still, it would have been desirable for those with more experience, those who had been around the field for some time, to advise them to keep their distance from such phenomena until they understood better what entertainment actually meant, its dynamics, and the interests at play.
A few years later, I was finally and genuinely impressed by a Jam & Spoon track. It was “Stella 1999–1992 (How Stella Got Her Groove)”. Compared with the simplistic Eurodance I had known until then, this was an entirely different approach. A meditative yet “groovy” piece, energetic yet relaxed, accompanied by an exceptional video.
I immediately found myself dreaming of exotic waters, learning to surf myself. I can’t say that the girl in the video was exactly my type: she seemed free of all worries, exploring distant lands. Hmm, I thought, a life like that must nevertheless be financed somehow.
With what, exactly, I wondered on the spot?
Well, you see, young people from Western countries spend much less when travelling through territories or among populations that are less fortunate. All right, Paul, I caught myself a fraction of a second later, but the girl doesn’t look Western. Perhaps she is a local who knows the “ways of the world” and knows how to get by with very little, someone well acquainted with local traditions, properly credentialed… Maybe she is actually a surf instructor.
You can never know, in the end, I concluded, closing the visual album of those beautiful images somewhere in my mind.
I thought about it for a little while longer, just a bit: why did the title begin with 1999 and then move back to 1992? The track had indeed been released in 1999, while I had known Jam & Spoon since the beginning of the ’90s. Was it a retrospective? A revision? A recollection? An album of memories encompassing their entire development up to that point? And why did the title seem to invite us to travel somehow backward in time?
And then, like a vague memory, another thought came back to me, perhaps later, perhaps right then. I think it was actually right then.
I had told you before about a brief romantic encounter I had through the student exchange between Șincai and a French high school, with Miss C. Even after we returned home, we exchanged two or three more letters, without much enthusiasm, at least on my part.
The experience had already failed during the Romanians’ visit there, perhaps because of the rumination and exchanges of information, more or less visible, among the young people, along with a number of latent conflicts within our group, perhaps originating in a past that was simply too distant. The teachers were not exactly removed from these tensions either, as I would come to understand both then and later.
After the second or third letter, Miss C. simply sent a photograph of several kittens, along with a simple, relatively conventional message.
Of course, remembering the girl’s spirit, the way she behaved, spoke and interacted, I felt sad. I wouldn’t have wanted kittens, my dear readers, but perhaps, more elegantly, simply silence. We had all understood that, in such circles, among such people, in such circumstances, affection between adolescents was simply not a realistic possibility.
But perhaps this thought, brought back from memory after watching Jam & Spoon’s “Stella”, was merely random, I reflected for a while. Naturally, beautiful things, elegant things, things pleasing to the eye and ear, sometimes awaken more diffuse memories, which then enter into our analysis.
Who are we to try to resist these “flashes” that the subconscious brings before our eyes according to its own mysterious logic? Surely we cannot control our mental balance to such an extent that we interpret the reality around us solely through short-term reasoning and perception, can we?
Mental equilibrium is based on a continuous negotiation between memory, our present state of mind, and projections, plans for the future, alongside family, community, even the nation. Ideally, together with all these entities, we should create new realities, new worlds, through collaboration and mutual understanding. Isn’t that so?
By then, I had already been producing electronic music on my own for some time (and not merely through the mental analysis of works I encountered on music television channels). At one point, in my small apartment in Militari, I started a piece inspired by the contemplative mood of “Stella”. I particularly liked the rhythmic way in which the original track’s basic chords structured the composition with a steady sense of energy.
Well, I didn’t want to copy anything, so I intuitively created a few new chords, imitating only the rhythmic pattern of the original. What emerged was a darker, sadder, perhaps more “mellow” sketch of a track, using a successful preset from the Korg Trinity I had at my disposal at the time. A clean sound, with a touch of digital grain that suggested something like analog saturation. And yet, still entirely digital, as the Trinity itself was.
But, you see, when we read a little of the Japanese workstation’s instruction manual, we discover that its sounds had been sampled from analog sources. Skilled sound engineers had known how to record the original source, refine the sound, and then reintroduce it into the machine’s memory as a starting point for other kinds of music.
But after a short period of experimentation, I abandoned the idea. I was extremely sad, depressed, and that state of mind, embedded in my sketch and listened to on repeat, created a feedback loop in which I kept falling deeper and deeper. As I repeatedly played the chords through my headphones, trying to imagine possible directions in which to develop them, I was exposing myself more and more to the original auditory image I had imprinted from the very first touch of the Trinity. I had to break the loop; it had already become too harmful for me.
Not long afterward, following the initiation of the project that the enthusiastic musicians at Yama Studios would eventually call “Știi ce-nseamnă?”, produced for Paula Seling and sponsored by the Phoenix Foundation, my little harmonic progression became the basis for a song bearing the same title: “Știi ce-nseamnă (să fii fericit)?”
Now, my dear friends, I am trying to remember what I must have been thinking when I heard Paula’s production in collaboration with Electric Brother.
But that will have to wait for the next entry, in which I may also explain how the later video came into being, cobbled together by me using stop-motion, while I was in that same eternal state of panic, anguish and deep depression.
Indeed, quite a beautiful cocktail of emotions, of the kind you seem to find only in the lives of artists haunted by existential crises.
Epilogue
Well, my dear friends, sometime around the beginning of the 2010s I began to understand that my high-school drawings, which had seemed to be nothing more than ordinary caricatures, innocent little pamphlets, and which had ultimately been created at the invitation of my classmate Betty, were perhaps simply too old.
Do you know what I told myself? Why not refresh the source of amusement for my social-network friends by starting a new series of drawings? This time using a new technique: a digital pencil, a graphics tablet, and a free, open-source program, Inkscape.
This time I no longer portrayed, stumbling around blindly and relying on instinct, excessively strict characters under whose command I had been forced to exist for four years. My project, first published online and then, in 2014, in physical form, in an edition of 600 copies, depicted situations bordering on the absurd and caricature-like characters defined by the way they adapted to the reality of those times.
From then on, my old humorous images from the mid-1990s evolved into a new form: subtler humor, infinitesimal details, greater dynamism, and a focus on structuralism – both from the perspective of interpersonal relationships and from that of its manifestation within human character.
Last year, during the anniversary celebrations marking thirty years since we graduated from high school, I met Betty again, along with a few other former classmates. To be honest, not for a moment did I feel that I wanted to spend even a second among that old group, let alone spend another 400 lei on the meal, and so on.
No, my dear friends, I spent forty-five minutes face to face with these people and their new life partners, sadly thinking about how relentlessly time had passed. On some faces, it had left its marks; on others, seemingly not at all.
Betty soon returned to Canada, where many Romanians I have known throughout my life seem to find, at last, a genuine sense of peace and fulfillment.
