English version
Dear readers… now that we have become accustomed to these complicated threads of the machinations of the post-communist Romanian system, let me tell you about a few more apparently random events which, within the relatively static network of our political, economic and cultural system, seem to have connected, at least to some extent, into rather atypical structures. Barely visible, perhaps, yet still resembling constellations of symbolic events.
Well, let me tell you. I have mentioned before my sister Paula’s band, which we called Enders, after Orson Scott Card’s novel Ender’s Game. Back then, we used to exchange books, and Paulica was eager to find out what I could recommend to her. She was beginning to enjoy the things I read as well — science fiction.
Well, after several good months of rehearsals under Professor Bertok’s guidance at the Students’ Club, we started going out to perform in public. With great excitement, we headed toward Moldavia, to Botoșani, for the Steaua de Cristal festival — this was sometime in the mid-1990s.
We actually have some photographs of the band on the railway platform, photographs which had probably already found their way into… good hands.
And as we arrive at the accommodation camp, I sit down, like a tired peasant, on the edge of the pavement, noticing a coach pulling up in front of me with other young contestants inside.
In one of the windows was Lili S. herself, a celebrity I had seen on Școala Vedetelor on television since the very beginning of the show.
I fell in love on the spot, I have to admit. As I have told you before, I like darker pigmentation, slightly unusual features, and that certain “come-hither” quality that not many girls possess. A mixture of joie de vivre and a certain openness to meeting new people without too much shyness.
And so I gathered up a little courage to start talking to her, deciding that we should meet again later.
On the day of the concert, the whole band played as well as we possibly could, and the following day we were to receive the “Steaua de Cristal Trophy” in the bands category.
As expected, nobody believed that Professor Bertok had not somehow intervened with the jury to get us the trophy.
We were in a rather strange situation: we were playing that fusion or jazz-rock style that had originated in the 1980s (with the professor’s heroes, Mezzoforte, Stevie Wonder, and so on, as our examples), which the other young musicians not only did not really understand, but did not particularly like either.
The fact that nobody could understand how we had managed to create such a discordant note compared with everyone else’s usual repertoire — covers of fashionable grunge or rock bands — probably intensified the suspicions and gossip.
Not long afterwards, we found out that we had also been recorded and that, on the radio program hosted by rock enthusiast Petre Magdin, we had even received a little praise. The presenter apparently said that “if you closed your eyes, you wouldn’t have thought it was a children’s band, but one made up of experienced adults.” Of course, perhaps the observation was a little exaggerated, but it was a nice one.
Well, as at every concert, Mr. Bertok would ask us to bring a bottle of pălincă with us. In the 1990s, it seemed that things moved along a little more smoothly if you “greased” the wheels of the system with some “hard currency.”
Now, whether “a little flask” also found its way into the hands of the jury members, we really have no way of knowing — but it is possible.
Professor Bertok had connections throughout the good circles of Romanian music and, indeed, the little backstage negotiations remain unknown to us.
Well, as we kept travelling by coach between the accommodation camp and the concert hall, we met another girl who was competing in the soloist category.
Dear readers, another coup de foudre struck me with full force.
There is no way to describe the feeling of falling instantly and hopelessly in love.
Why hopelessly, you may ask? Well, you see, the girl seemed slightly detached from the context: that peculiar mixture of seriousness, almost uncharacteristic of a passionate musician; cold blue eyes; an ingenuous face; and, on top of all that, a pair of thick-rimmed glasses that seemed just slightly out of fashion.
A nerd, I thought to myself — but an extraordinarily beautiful one.
Yes, but I was considered a nerd myself.
Among all those cool, natural, realistic kids who paid attention to every detail, a relationship between two outsiders was, according to my calculations, hopeless.
We kept kissing each other for a while, but, quite clearly, I could not see in the girl’s reactions the intensity upon which a closer connection might have been built. I was already imagining us exchanging addresses, corresponding with each other, and perhaps even visiting one another for a long time afterwards.
Returning to Lili S., I had a brief encounter with her in the hallway of the accommodation dormitory, and we kissed a little. Fine, but my problem was that, although there was a beautiful tension there, one small detail stopped me from continuing the interaction.
Quite simply, the girl had not removed the hair from her upper lip, something I discussed with one of my bandmates. Now, let’s be honest, such grooming practices were not yet commonplace at the time, so the situation is understandable.
It was simply that, always attentive to details, teenagers act instinctively, and some form of instinct is activated when things do not exactly match their desires.
Later in life, perhaps we no longer seek perfection to quite the same extent. Perhaps we become less demanding, or perhaps, after years of wear and tear, social friction and unsuccessful experiences, we simply learn to compromise with that instinct.
Whether this is a good thing, whether we gain more than we lose through these negotiations with the standards of our youth, remains something to consider on a case-by-case basis.
Well, a few years later, at university, that little imperfection I had casually whispered to one of my Enders bandmates about Miss Lili S. was to reappear, in the strangest possible way, like an echo — a bizarre allusion in the work of my new friend Alex Ionescu.
In one of his graduation films at the Film Directing Faculty, Alex used one of my pieces, produced around that time, as the soundtrack for a visual experiment featuring the celebrated actress Cătălina Mustață.
I actually remember sitting in the audience during the screening and being extremely excited about the collaboration. I did, however, flinch a little toward the ending, where Alex quickly applied a low-pass filter to the soundtrack, perhaps bringing the composition to an unnecessarily abrupt conclusion.
We will go into greater detail about this episode and the complicated machinery in which Alex Ionescu operated for quite some time.
Also, tangentially, after the arrival of YouTube, I was to observe the individual evolution of the by-then-famous Lili S.
I only watched the video for the song “Lee Lee,” somewhat stunned by certain role-playing games which, to be honest, I attributed to the complicated threads and networks inhabiting the minds of media celebrities in the post-December era.
I believe that, up to this point, all these productions have been rather precarious and often perhaps too virulent, even violent in their expression and language — visually, technically, symbolically, and so on.
To be honest, my first thought jumped to the Yahoo Messenger alias from the 2000s of a former acquaintance, a brief connection from Baia Mare, Carmen T. (“leeloo”).
I still kept in sporadic contact with many former acquaintances from high school or university, happy that we could now connect instantly without having to meet face to face.
Whether Carmen T. might have been startled by the grand call of Lili S.’s celebrity through the mass media, or whether she was simply approached privately, I have no way of knowing.
Anything is possible within this almost inquisitorial system which, in my opinion, is Romania’s post-December mass media.
Now let us return to our weekend in Botoșani.
The day after the band’s concert, on the evening when the solo vocal competition was taking place, Vlad T. and I had a little drink backstage from one of the small bottles of pălincă we had brought from home.
A little drunk, it was my idea that we should carry out a spontaneous act of intervention, A short circuit and an anti-system manifesto. In other words, we would walk onto the stage behind one of the contestants, completely at random, and express ourselves freely, with our hands raised, doing a little ballet and a few pirouettes.
Actually, it is rather difficult to explain why I invited Vlad to this little “happening.” First of all, I wanted to show off a little, I have to admit. But why?
Well, I considered these cultural institutions known as Youth Festivals to be somewhat… outdated and anachronistic. The accommodation was modest, the performance halls old, dusty, almost falling apart. The contestants naively dreamed of glorious careers in the local media and then, perhaps, beyond that, in the international media.
Perhaps I had an intuition that the cultural establishment of those days was corrupt and, in fact, we already had evidence of this in our own personal lives.
Honestly, it did not seem right to me for our teacher to “intervene” with the jury or make use of his personal connections. I had always been strongly committed to fairness and had never wanted to win anything I had not earned, so, having been taught otherwise by my parents, I never approved of the concept of “connections, acquaintances and pull.”
And, after all, what use is a prize or a position within the “System” if it has been obtained through bribery or deception?
Talent, work and their actual value can never be genuinely validated through fraud — unless, perhaps, you put so much pressure on the audience that you effectively put an iron fist in the mouths of critics or anyone who dares to criticize or challenge you.
Nevertheless, we are not exactly far removed from such manifestations or abuses of power even today.
Returning to the incident, our little spontaneous happening was met first with murmurs and then with indignation. Someone from the jury shouted at us; some people may have found it amusing. The performer froze for a moment, unsure whether to continue or not, looking around in bewilderment at her newly acquired troupe of dancers.
We then withdrew backstage, still holding the bottle in our hands. I, at least, was satisfied with the intervention.
Later that evening, I spent some time with the beautiful nerd at the post-festival party. A dark energy was haunting me, so I started drinking rather seriously.
The poor girl watched for several dozen minutes as my senses were gradually being annihilated and then, seeing the increasingly advanced state of drunkenness I was slipping into, she left. Around us, young people were dancing, talking and drinking just like other people their age.
Almost in blackout, I suddenly found myself in front of the bathroom mirror in the room, being looked after by Mr. Bertok’s daughter.
For quite some time, both I and the other members of the band had realized that the teacher’s daughter harbored a certain amount of affection for the saxophone player.
That would be me.
It was hardly surprising, I told myself. She wasn’t the only one; I had a few other admirers around town. Or, at least, that was how it seemed.
Naturally, this was a strange conflict of “influences,” so it never even occurred to me to take advantage of the situation by giving her any kind of response. I ignored, as carefully as I could, the girl’s small gestures of tenderness and went to bed in a terrible state of anguish.
The next day I visited Vlad T. in his room, where he was staying with his girlfriend, whom he had met only that weekend. She was an extremely beautiful girl, as, incidentally, were all of the drummer’s conquests — he was very popular and quite handsome in those days.
It was only after I had finally emerged from my hangover that I learned that the beautiful nerd had left the young musicians’ party with a guy who had appeared out of nowhere, in a modern car.
Vlad’s girlfriend told me that the guy had gotten her extremely drunk and had tried to take advantage of her in a rather abusive manner.
With a mixture of pity and astonishment, she told me that, in a total blackout, the girl had been put to bed by her friends while unconscious.
She kept repeating obsessively that she wanted to be left alone, that she did not want to be abused, and so on.
I have to admit, I was stunned, shocked and disappointed, all at the same time.
Several thoughts overlapped:
1) How had the beautiful nerd been so easily seduced by such a ridiculous status symbol as a car, even if it was an imported one?
If that was the case, then once again I had fallen too naïvely in love with someone who really did not deserve my attention or my time.
At the same time, the answer had been there from the beginning: nerdy girls are often superficial, inexperienced, eager to be seen as integrated into the “world,” to be noticed, to construct a valid public image for themselves. To be validated, ultimately, as legitimate, eligible, popular women.
2) How had the guy appeared so suddenly, so spontaneously, and why was he so aggressive and intrusive?
3) Why did her friends tell me about the incident with a mixture of pity and sadness?
These questions remained in my mind for a while, along with the entire context, awaiting a slower, more intuitive processing at some later point.
Clearly, I decided that, from that day onward, I would no longer allow myself to be attracted to a girl wearing glasses.
As an epilogue, and as one more bizarre detail, I cannot for the life of me explain why, that morning, I suddenly started running through the forest wearing nothing but my underwear, for quite some time.
That was simply the instinct of the moment, which caused a little amusement and quite a bit of bewilderment among the people who knew me.
Then we returned home with the “Steaua de Cristal” trophy, and things seemed to settle back into normality.
For a long time afterwards, I was left with the regret that I had not kissed the future celebrity Lili S. enough.
