After the Rain este EP-ul de debut al formației Paper Lantern, un duo româno-japonez fictiv, imaginat ca parte a unei istorii muzicale alternative plasate în Cluj, România, în primăvara anului 1989.

Îmbinând influențe de Japanese city pop, sophisti-pop, smooth jazz și West Coast AOR, cele cinci piese spun o poveste discretă despre prietenie, distanță și emoții nerostite. Înregistrat într-un mic studio profesionist pe bandă analogică, EP-ul urmărește parcursul a doi studenți uniți de muzică: o studentă japoneză la arhitectură aflată la studii în România și un student român la filosofie, pasionat de saxofon. În loc să urmărească evenimente spectaculoase, piesele celebrează frumusețea momentelor obișnuite: ploaia care se prelinge pe geam, bilețelele scrise de mână, cafeaua băută după repetiții, străzile pustii și melodiile care devin amintiri înainte ca cineva să-și dea seama.

Fiecare element al proiectului — de la muzică și copertă până la fotografii, materialele promoționale și întreaga istorie fictivă a formației — a fost creat cu grijă ca un omagiu adus eleganței discrete a înregistrărilor de la sfârșitul anilor ’80. After the Rain imaginează acel gen de disc independent uitat, care ar fi putut dispărea în tăcere din rafturile magazinelor de muzică, pentru a fi redescoperit abia după câteva decenii.

Unele albume devin clasice. Altele devin amintirile unor locuri care nu au existat niciodată.

After the Rain is the debut EP by Paper Lantern, a fictional Romanian–Japanese duo imagined as part of an alternative musical history set in Cluj, Romania, during the spring of 1989.

Blending Japanese city pop, sophisti-pop, smooth jazz and West Coast AOR, the five songs tell a quiet story of friendship, distance and unspoken emotions. Recorded in a small professional studio on analog tape, the EP follows two university students brought together by music: a Japanese architecture student studying abroad and a Romanian philosophy student and saxophonist. Rather than focusing on dramatic events, the songs celebrate ordinary moments—rain against a window, handwritten notes, coffee shared after rehearsals, empty streets, and melodies that become memories before anyone realizes it.

Every aspect of the project—from the music and artwork to the photographs, promotional material and fictional archival history—has been carefully created as an homage to the understated elegance of late-1980s recordings. After the Rain imagines the kind of forgotten independent release that might have quietly disappeared from record shops, only to be rediscovered decades later.
