Dragii mei elevi!
English version
My dear students! Welcome back after a short weekend during which my wife, the university professor, and I went to the thermal baths in Hungary. I had been hearing about the water park in Hajdúszoboszló for many years, and we finally decided to go and have a little look for ourselves.
Oh, I have to tell you, I was very pleasantly impressed. I hadn’t been out of the country in a long time and, since we left at around five in the morning, we stopped for breakfast in the first town after the border. What a splendid little restaurant with a guesthouse it was! I don’t know if you’ve noticed how beautiful and tasteful the architecture is in Hungary, even in the smallest and most modest little village. You don’t see opulence, garishness, screaming colours or stainless-steel railings everywhere. And even when such things do exist, the architects create rather special designs, those geometric ones that seem to have come out of a design magazine rather than from a film about the Middle Ages, as they often do here.
I was also impressed by the buffet. You know, we can’t really afford outings like this very often; I know you’re used to them. Perhaps you go on holiday to Egypt or Turkey, staying at all-inclusive resorts. But we’re a little more modest in that respect. With my twenty-year-old Peugeot 306, we travel less often and a little more slowly. I admire the cooks’ restraint: they never overdo things and only put out as much food on the serving tables as is actually necessary. Another sign that, in Hungary, civilization has been ahead of us by many years, and that we still have a lot of catching up to do. I hope we manage it, my dear students. I really hope we do, and as quickly as possible.
But now, let’s get back to our little sheep. It’s going to be a short class today. I’m letting you go home early because, unfortunately, something started knocking under the hood of our car on the way back, and I have an appointment at the garage. Hmm, I wish I could afford a car like some of your parents have, but… you see, working for the state comes with benefits, but it also comes with certain shortcomings.
In the past few weeks, if I remember correctly, we were discussing in one of our classes the idea of “movement within a system,” and especially movement within a corrupt, or highly corrupt, system. Let’s continue for a little while and bring the idea to its conclusion, taking our reasoning all the way to its logical end. We really shouldn’t leave such a beautiful subject unfinished, should we?
We already know that, within a corrupt social, economic and political system, networks of power crystallize into solid structures which not only continually expand into the deepest layers of society, but also seek to secure their own stability and permanence. Imagine them as lichens or fungi, the kind that grow in forests beneath the roots of trees. They spread rapidly and voraciously wherever the environment is favourable. In practice, their expansion is limitless as long as nothing stands in their way, and they can occupy vast territories stretching towards indefinite horizons.
But the comparison with elements of nature is not quite enough for us, my dear students. Nature remains, after all, a system fundamentally different from the human one: it knows not to damage the whole because, in the end, it would destroy itself. There are complex regulatory mechanisms at work here which ultimately ensure continuity and create favourable conditions for all living things to evolve in a complex symphony, moving in a direction which, some say, is still unknown to us.
In human society, however, the methods by which structures of corruption expand seem to follow rather different rules. If we did not oppose them, if we did not fight them at all, we might wake up one day, God forbid, to find that evil has occupied the entire spectrum of human activity; it could reach the point where, eventually, we would be forced to adopt their non-values, their language and their dynamics in their entirety. We are very fortunate that there are societies in this World which do not allow themselves to be corrupted so easily, and which can sometimes function either as observers, as regulatory mechanisms, or, in extreme cases, as a kind of Moral Police.
Let me give you a small example. Not long ago, I saw a documentary on television about an extremely corrupt country. There, mafia groups that had long been infiltrated into administrative networks, law-enforcement agencies and politics forces had control over every resource capable of generating substantial profit. The documentary actually gave as an example a fruit which, in an extremely wealthy neighbouring country, had become very popular over the past ten or twenty years.
Well, the growers and exporters of this modest fruit, who had once lived perfectly well and in relative peace, suddenly found themselves effectively taken “under the ownership” of the mafia groups. Either they had to give them a percentage of their sales from every harvest, or they were persecuted and, eventually, even killed – made into an example for the others. Of course, as usually happens, the mafiosi demanded more and more of the proceeds year after year, in exchange for the so-called protection tax, exploiting these modest citizens to the very limit.
There were also several revolts which were brutally suppressed by the mafias through public executions; actual wars were fought between the growers and the abusers, and they were always won by the latter. In countries where such conditions exist, even the Police are overwhelmed by the situation and are often themselves in danger.
I was saddened at the end of the documentary to see that one of the people interviewed had been shot simply for daring to speak to the film crew. I was left thinking about it for a while, wondering whether the filmmakers themselves had been aware of the risks to which they were exposing their interviewee, and whether those involved truly understood, to the very end, just how difficult his situation was.
All right! What do you think about this state of affairs, my dear pupils and students? Would you like our own country to become such a mafia paradise? A country in which society is divided into terrified citizens, on the one hand, practically reduced to slavery, and an entire infrastructure – administration, police, politics – owned and controlled by mafia clans? (Let’s call them “interest groups,” just to amuse ourselves a little.)
Do you know what we have to do to get there? Simple! We begin by turning our heads away, closing our eyes, remaining silent whenever we notice the first irregularities, the first deviations. Gradually, through contagion, that insidious, subtle, devious fear begins to spread. More and more people gradually retreat into silence, and the country begins to divide itself into abusers, victims and silent spectators.
Gradually, however, corruption and its networks spread, and they require more resources: human, financial, logistical. Once it has perfected its methods, put down deep roots and spread far enough, corruption exhausts its first opportunities and begins, gradually, through that process of “trial and error” the Anglo-Saxons like to talk about, to consume us as well – those of us who turned our heads away at the beginning.
Well, well! Now we’re starting to panic! We thought we were beyond any danger – after all, the fools are simply destined to perish. Wasn’t that the beautiful principle the evolutionists talk about: natural selection, isn’t it? We consider reporting the matter to the Police, but then we realize that these positions within the system have been compromised as well: corruption has reached them too and taken control, not necessarily of everyone, but of the most important pawns; the others, like us, will submit out of fear of losing their jobs, fear of reprisals, or perhaps simply because they do not want to stand out in a system that seems to keep moving forward all by itself.
Well, you can use your imagination and take the scenario a little further: the mafia structures stabilize, appoint new generations of actors and pawns within the System, educate them, gather information and, above all, in a globalized society, begin to consult and cooperate with others like themselves, from all across the Planet. Now we are trapped within several circles of potential abusers, with ramifications, interests and methods of operation that are already beyond our knowledge. After all, what is a Mafia if not an interest group with slightly less orthodox methods, one that never organizes public symposiums or conferences at TED?
And, when all is said and done, can we really blame them all the way? We have already demonstrated, in abundance, our lack of civic spirit and initiative, not to mention our hypocrisy, mercantilism and opportunism: when it suits us, we play the model citizen, we speak in public, proclaiming our allegiance to the values of democracy, humanism, culture, society, and so on. When we no longer like the way things are going, we forget all those declarations and retreat into our spacious apartments, under the pretext that we are protecting our families and our interests, suddenly becoming thoroughly individualistic and delegating responsibility, claiming that, after all, it is not our business but the business of those whom Society has appointed to positions of authority to keep things in order.
We go through life performing ballets and pirouettes upon the social stage, tending to our public image with the same care with which one prunes a prized ornamental shrub. We manipulate the truth, sweep embarrassing facts and truths under the rug, carefully, skilfully and persistently erasing the traces of our own mistakes or those of our families. When necessary, we lend a hand to the friends with whom we go on picnics in such enterprises, acting like packs of hounds set loose on the hunt. You understand what I mean, don’t you?
Why would a mafioso choose to act like us? Perhaps not only is it simply not in his nature to do so, but perhaps he was never born into such a structure of power, whether informal or formal, and from the earliest age he had to find some way to… exist… simply to exist. Not necessarily to “succeed in life” in the generally accepted sense, but at least to be able to imagine a future, however bleak it might be; a future for himself first, perhaps for his family, which, surely, he must have “cared about” at some point; and then, later on, for the family he himself created.
Here, our discourse can borrow a little from scientific studies in order to formulate a counterargument: yes, that does seem to be the case; we are, after all, animals, and we act instinctively. And yes, perhaps we also “move” in interest groups, in packs – as you so unpleasantly put it – but it is well known, it has been studied: this is how human beings have cooperated since the earliest times. Ultimately, we are doing nothing more than protecting ourselves from these specimens who are corrupt to the marrow of their bones (and have been so for a very long time). They are bad people, harmful to society as a whole. We have always known who they are, and once we could no longer avoid them, we had to learn and adopt their methods in order to protect ourselves. More than that, we were forced to become active against them and to take action. And yes, our excuse for behaving now just like genuine mafiosi is that these elements must be confronted with ten times their own strength, until evil is eradicated at its roots.
Yes, my dear students, we all know that “evil” is always on the other side of the “fence”, in the other people’s garden. Some of us are simply incapable, at any point in our lives, of looking at ourselves critically, let alone trying to correct our mistakes, shape our character, improve our education, or at the very least give others an explanation when we sense that things are not quite perfect. But, isn’t that so? This requires a long and profound process of self-knowledge, a process that not everyone is willing to undertake, and sometimes not even willing to begin.
Many of us are “perfectly fine just the way we are” from the moment we are born, and that’s that. Our parents brought us into this world so that we might carry their immeasurable fame and worth forward into the future, affirming our uniqueness, our talent, our intelligence, our good manners or our good taste. Once we have passed through life, we know that we will close our eyes satisfied that yet another generation of the family has passed through the Universe and has truly done justice to the verb “to be” – simply by being.
Well, I got a little carried away talking and made today’s class run a bit longer as well. I have to rush to the garage; I’m actually running a little late. I really need to find out what that noise under the hood is all about. I just hope it doesn’t cost me a fortune, kids, because then there goes our trip to Costinești in September!
Take care, my dears. I’ll see you next week for the continuation.
