Eco-utopia ( Ep. 1 )

English Translation

It is well known, isn’t it, that every animal species must reproduce in order to continue evolving into the future. A future that not only can we not predict in the long term—or even the extremely long term—but one that we sometimes cannot even guess for the coming months, weeks, or days.

Many times I have asked myself: “Where is the evolutionary engine of the human species?” What made the australopithecines, over the course of millions of years, stand up on two legs and eventually become what we are today—modern humans capable of talking to AI systems and producing so much… “AI Slop” (as the cynics would say)? And if we go even further back in time, what drove life on Earth to conquer the land, considering that for hundreds of millions of years it existed only as an “organic soup” in the planet’s oceans? (Approximate figures—I am too lazy to look up the exact numbers right now.)

There are many theories. Some even claim that life was planted here by a far older extraterrestrial civilization and that we are nothing more than a program meant to populate a planet with favorable conditions. Perhaps, billions of years ago, some clever green scientists with large, glassy eyes prepared, in an organic form suited to local conditions, a genetic “program” containing all the instructions necessary for evolution. Only geneticists could perhaps judge whether this hypothesis contains even a small grain of truth.

Others, more imaginative and more poetic, say that the Universe itself needed us so that… “we could contemplate, understand, and admire it” in all its complexity. Quite a vain Universe, I would dare add—a Universe intelligent enough to require a tiny consciousness in which to gaze upon itself, much as a young maiden admires herself in a mirror.

During the years I spent lying with my hands behind my head, thinking and staring at the light bulb, I kept pushing these fanciful ideas further. I looked at the breathtaking technological evolution of the last two hundred years as a remarkable acceleration, after thousands of years during which we had barely crawled through history, only to move ever more quickly through Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance. I kept telling myself that all these wonders that make our lives so easy today had arrived almost too quickly.

I kept wondering why. Some of us know that, one day, our Sun will expand, scorch the planets closest to it, and reduce the Earth to ashes. Perhaps, with the tenderness of a God seated upon a golden throne, the Universe is hurrying us along with a switch across our backsides, urging us to evolve faster. After all, it surely did not invest four billion years to bring us to this point only to leave us transformed into grilled minced-meat rolls. Without mustard, no less.

And then, after who knows how many more trillions of years, the Universe itself will slowly fade away. The last stars will cease producing energy, and everywhere there will be a darkness and a silence worthy of the saddest crypt. At least, that is what astronomers and some physicists tell us, based on the calculations we can make today using measuring instruments that are still rather imperfect and imprecise—tools that we ourselves have created. (Well, not exactly “we,” but rather the scientists working in research institutes around the world.)

Of course, we cannot be naive enough to believe that we are now at the very “peak of civilization.” Even if our planet were struck by an asteroid, it would still retain enough resources to start all over again, if necessary. Tiny mice would still rummage through the ashes of the apocalypse, hardy mosses and lichens would shelter small insects and little worms, and just like that, after a few hundred million more years, Earth might once again give rise to another kind of civilized species. Perhaps it would have different proportions, different colors, perhaps three or four legs. No one can know what such a parallel “timeline” might look like, but neither is it entirely impossible.

Until then, we can look around us and, with the help of our vast libraries—now digital as well, only a mouse click away—we can also imagine our own past. Whenever it suits us, we call ourselves animals: we want sex, we want to fight for the admiration of females in brutal contests. Our males know from nature documentaries that, to be considered eligible, you must either have brightly colored plumage or perform graceful courtship dances.

Everywhere there is the danger that another male—stronger, more colorful, perhaps younger and more vigorous—may enter your territory and threaten the balance and security of your dominance. Here, my dear friends, the struggle is indeed real. Winning the admiration of the female—or of the females peacefully grazing within your territory—is anything but easy, and it may be lost far too quickly.

Yet, whenever we wish, we can change the register of our discourse. We become evolved, spiritual beings, children of God, if that happens to suit our narrative. We negotiate with reason and with what we consider evidence, confidently declaring that the Earth is only six thousand years old. Moreover, we present ourselves as the devoted caretakers of our species’ future, appointing ourselves as its diligent gardeners. We prune every dead branch, cultivate new buds, graft new species, and give birth to new evolutionary branches. Here we become consummate aesthetes, convinced that we understand the human species and its evolutionary mechanisms down to the finest detail, and that we know exactly what it needs. What it needs in order to carry civilization into that radiant future where violence, disease, corruption—and perhaps even death itself—will no longer exist, where we shall live together in a solar community, loving one another. (I kindly ask the more mischievous readers not to imagine any inappropriate sexual gatherings here. We shall preserve the nuclear family, lovingly raise our beautiful children, and, by injecting ourselves weekly with a special serum—or perhaps by programming it into us from birth—we shall never grow old again.)

Of course, by no longer growing old, the planet will be able to sustain tens, hundreds, or even thousands of new generations. We will become fellow citizens with our great-great-great-grandparents, just as we will personally know our descendants of the 500th generation. By then, however, we will already possess spacecraft, stellar colonies, and, with an updated and renewed Bible, God will encourage us to spread throughout the Universe, just as, two thousand years ago, after expelling us from Paradise, He instructed us to populate the entire Earth. Back then, He also told us that the animals of this Earth had been placed at our disposal for care, reproduction, and immediate consumption, à volonté, as the French would say.

But, my dear students—and thank you for filling this lecture hall today—we are still quite far from those times. Even the wealthiest among us suffer from serious, incurable diseases, while others, perhaps the poorest villagers, live happily into their nineties, drinking and smoking like chimneys. It is almost as though fate has its own unique way of mocking our self-confidence in the face of life’s hardships.

Now let us return to courtship rituals. You see, psychoanalysis states quite plainly that almost everything we do in life is ultimately driven by the sexual instinct. Much like mayflies, the human species seems eager to move swiftly toward the future, to perpetuate itself indefinitely, producing generation after generation at remarkable speed. And we, powerless before the laws of nature, must submit. We must have children; otherwise, life no longer seems to have any purpose. Perhaps this is how we learn what caring for the helpless truly means. Perhaps this is how we ultimately discover empathy. Perhaps, by raising a child, we come to understand our own parents and grandparents a little better. Perhaps, throughout this long and difficult process, we finally make peace with the less-than-perfect situations we experienced earlier in our lives. Our parents, too, were once children, just as our grandparents and great-grandparents were. In this way, we extend an invisible thread into the darkness of the eons that have passed, and we continue to carry forward their hope that they did not live in vain. They left behind something—or perhaps someone—upon this Earth.

To be honest, this phenomenon has often preoccupied me. It is customary that, somewhere around the age of twenty-five, at most thirty, people create their own little copies—a genetic cocktail, more or less successful, distilled from their two parents, their grandparents, and their complicated family trees. I would even venture to say that, with a few exceptions, this cocktail is like modeling clay in the hands of the parents and that, as studies suggest, our genetic inheritance—as well as the way it develops throughout life—can indeed be modified.

Recent studies show that certain components of our DNA can be inhibited, while others can be stimulated. I have mentioned this before: two identical twins raised in different environments may develop in dramatically different ways. So the classic Western question, “nature or nurture?”, now seems to have two equally valid answers: both nature and nurture.

By now, you can probably anticipate my first conclusion: incapable parents may suppress the potential of a person’s genetic inheritance through poor education, while attentive ones may help it develop far beyond what might normally be expected. Likewise, a social, political, or economic system can function as an inhibiting force—if it is corrupt, it functions poorly—or it can encourage human development beyond what the average person might imagine. Let us admit that, from the moment we enter nursery school or kindergarten, we are being raised by a Symbolic Parent, which is not only the System as a whole, but also the local community, the national community, and ultimately the global one.

There is a beautiful African proverb that says a child should be raised not only by its parents but by the entire village. I believe there is profound truth in that idea and that, the more we are exposed throughout our lives to a diversity of influences—provided those influences are beneficial—the more likely the result is a healthier adult, both physically and psychologically.

It is not difficult to observe, when looking at the overall health of a population, just how healthy its System is, and how well it connects with the world surrounding it. Today, we seem to be facing an epidemic of metabolic diseases, mental illnesses, countless forms of cancer, and many other conditions. Before 1989, people rarely died of cancer, and even then it was often said that the victim had been “irradiated” by the Securitate. Today, however, we seem to have become far too accustomed to the enormous number of victims claimed by these merciless diseases.

We shall continue next week, my dear students—the university rector is calling me, and I must leave you on your own for the rest of the lecture. Please study the chapter on dinosaurs. I would like each of you to prepare a visual chart in PowerPoint, dividing a straight line into segments and indicating where modern civilization stands in relation to the whole.

Goodbye!
