Fir narativ #1:
La începutul anilor ’80, tata, Ruben Seling, la acea vreme inginer constructor la IPIC C.F. Maramureș, este abordat de Securitate pentru a deveni informator. (Tata mi-a povestit acum câțiva ani întâmplarea, întâmplare care a devenit un element-cheie în decodarea tuturor evenimentelor din viața noastră de până atunci, ca și a celor de după.)
Tata mi-a mărturisit că, într-un gest de naivitate extremă, s-a hotărât să colaboreze, sperând că nu va informa, gândindu-se de asemenea că va ocupa singurul „post” de informator din echipa lui de șantier. Cu amărăciune mi-a spus că, până la urmă, mai existau și alți colaboratori ai Securității în echipă, așa că gestul lui a rămas complet inutil.
Din acel moment, tata a rămas cu dosar la Securitate, bineînțeles. Dacă la acea dată locuiam pe str. Vlad Țepeș, în aprox. 1985 am primit prin repartiție un apt. pe Republicii 19, apt. 13 (?)
Ca informație suplimentară, tata a venit și bătut acasă. De cine, nu știu, dar sincer, mi-e greu să mai deschid subiectul și să-l amărăsc inutil.

În perioada interbelică, fratele bunicului mamei, dl. Fonai, a urmat un parcurs ambițios până a devenit membru în ceea ce era pe atunci Ministerul Mediului (Silviculturii, Pădurilor). Căsătorit cu d-na Olga, fiica unor oameni înstăriți din Vișeu, Maramureș, au moștenit împreună circa 65.000 hectare de păduri în zonă, câteva imobile, atât în localitate, cât și în București. Gurile „rele” spun că într-unul din aceste imobile ar funcționa (sau ar fi funcționat) Ambasada Ungariei.
Într-un alt imobil, cuplul ar fi fost lăsat să locuiască și după naționalizarea de după 1945. După moartea soțului, d-na Olga a fost îngrijită de o persoană care ar fi avut legături (sau chiar ar fi făcut parte) din familia actorului Ion Caramitru.
Se spune și că, spre finalul vieții, d-na Olga era într-o stare mentală precară și se mai spune și că atunci a apărut un document prin care toate bunurile dobândite de această familie Fonai înainte de comunism treceau în posesia familiei Caramitru.
Ion Caramitru a fost în vizită în satul lor de origine, Remetea Chioarului, Maramureș, discutând cu primarul, „interceptat”, bineînțeles, de săteni. Familiile Fonai, urmașii, ar fi făcut o încercare de revendicare ce, din păcate, din motive necunoscute mie, nu a fost dusă la bun sfârșit.
La momentul actual, pădurile din Vișeu sunt, se spune, sub influența localnicilor, ele fiind exploatate (și) în mod ilegal până la această dată.
Întrebări pe care mi le pun:
- Dacă actul de donație către fam. Caramitru s-a făcut cu ceva ani înainte de Revoluție, se știa oare încă de atunci că blocul comunist era pe cale să „dispară”? Cum se face că majoritatea celor care au apărut la TV în timpul Revoluției sunt extrem de bine situați din punct de vedere financiar?
- Nu cumva abordarea d-lui Ruben Seling, tata, de către Securitate, a fost făcută tocmai în ideea de a pune bazele unei forme de șantaj pentru viitor, împotriva fam. Seling, Fonai și, probabil, a ceea ce a devenit ulterior celebra lui/lor fiică, Paula Seling?

In the early 1980s, my father, Ruben Seling, at that time a construction engineer at IPIC C.F. Maramureș, was approached by the Securitate and asked to become an informant. (My father told me about this incident a few years ago—an incident that later became a key element in decoding all the events in our lives up to that point, as well as those that followed.)
My father confessed that, in an act of extreme naivety, he decided to cooperate, hoping that he would not actually provide information. He also believed he would occupy the only “informant position” within his construction site team. With bitterness, he later told me that, in the end, there were other collaborators of the Securitate within the team as well, making his gesture completely pointless.
From that moment on, my father naturally had a file with the Securitate. If at that time we were living on Vlad Țepeș Street, around 1985 we received, through official allocation, an apartment at Republicii 19, apartment 13 (?)
As additional information, my father once came home beaten. By whom, I do not know, and honestly, it is difficult for me to reopen the subject and cause him unnecessary pain.

During the interwar period, my mother’s grandfather’s brother, Mr. Fonai, followed an ambitious career path until he became a member of what was then the Ministry of the Environment (Forestry). Married to Mrs. Olga, the daughter of a wealthy family from Vișeu, Maramureș, the two of them inherited approximately 65,000 hectares of forest in the area, along with several properties, both locally and in Bucharest. Malicious rumors claim that one of these buildings houses (or once housed) the Embassy of Hungary.
In another property, the couple was reportedly allowed to continue living even after the post-1945 nationalization. After her husband’s death, Mrs. Olga was cared for by a person who allegedly had ties to (or may even have been part of) the family of the actor Ion Caramitru.
It is also said that toward the end of her life, Mrs. Olga was in a precarious mental state, and it is further claimed that at that time a document appeared by which all assets acquired by the Fonai family before communism were transferred into the possession of the Caramitru family.
Ion Caramitru visited their village of origin, Remetea Chioarului, Maramureș, speaking with the mayor, and was, of course, “intercepted” by the villagers. The Fonai families, the descendants, reportedly attempted a restitution claim which, unfortunately, for reasons unknown to me, was not brought to a successful conclusion.
At present, the forests around Vișeu are said to be under the influence of local interests, being exploited (also) illegally up to this day.
Questions I ask myself:
- If the deed of donation to the Caramitru family was made a few years before the Revolution, was it already known at that time that the communist bloc was about to “disappear”? How is it that most of those who appeared on television during the Revolution were extremely well positioned financially?
- Could it be that the approach made by the Securitate toward my father, Mr. Ruben Seling, was intended precisely to lay the groundwork for a form of future blackmail against the Seling and Fonai families, and probably against what later became their famous daughter, Paula Seling?
