Iar am avut insomnie azi-noapte. Pe la 3 a.m. mi s-a făcut foame așa că m-am dus până la șaormeria non-stop din centru, de peste drum de Mac. Eram îmbrăcat în hainele de dormit – pantaloni de trening și un hanorac cu glugă jerpelită, mi-a fost lene să mă îmbrac „pentru ocazie”.

Și cum stăteam eu în fața geamului și mă scotoceam după bani mărunți, în parcare a oprit un SUV din care a coborât un cuplu. Mă gândesc că se întorceau de la vreun club, pentru că erau îmbrăcați de petrecere, și băiatul i-a spus fetei cu o voce scăzută:

„Rămâi la mașină că văd că e un boschetar acolo…”

M-am uitat în jur, nu mai era nimeni… se pare că eu eram boschetarul.

Băiatul s-a apropiat de vitrina fast-food-ului și mi-a întins o bancnotă de 5 lei. N-am știut cum să reacționez. M-am gândit să încerc să mă explic, dar mi-am dat seama că orice cuvânt spus după gestul ăla era absolut inutil, așa că am luat banii și am scos pe gură singurul lucru care mi-a venit în cap:

„Mulțumesc, și așa să te ajute Dumnezeu!”

I had insomnia again last night. Around 3 a.m., I got hungry, so I went to the 24/7 shawarma place downtown, across from McDonald’s. I was dressed in my sleeping clothes—sweatpants and a worn-out hoodie; I was too lazy to dress “for the occasion.”

As I was standing by the window rummaging for small change, an SUV stopped in the parking lot, and a couple got out. I guess they were coming back from a club because they were dressed for a party, and the guy said to the girl in a low voice:

“Stay in the car, I see there’s a homeless guy there…”

I looked around; no one else was there… apparently, I was the homeless guy.

The guy approached the fast-food counter and handed me a 5 lei bill. I didn’t know how to react. I thought about trying to explain myself, but I realized that any words spoken after that gesture would be completely useless, so I took the money and blurted out the only thing that came to mind:

“Thank you, and may God help you too!”
